A desirable botanical set, comprising all text and plate volumes issued for Erich Nelson's study of orchids and offering upwards of 100 fine colour plates. First edition. A pleasing set including the text and plate volumes for both volumes ofMonographie und Ikonographie der Orchidaceen-Gattungen,published in 1968 and 1976 by German illustrator and botanist Erich Nelson. Comprising four volumes in total. The plate volume for 1968 contains thirty colour plates, six monochrome plates and two monochrome map plates. The plate volume for 1976 contains eighty colour plates, six monochrome plates with flower analyses, and one colour map. Collated, complete. Text volumes are in the publisher's cloth, and plates are preserved in the publisher's matching cloth-backed slipcases. Plates are printed on thick card and remain bright and clean. A beautiful study of the orchids of the European and Mediterranean countries, the illustrations for which for which Nelson is chiefly known. The text volumes serve to inform of the genus described, particularly serapias, aceras, loroglossum and barlia (1968) and dactlorhiza (1976). With notes on their origins, distributions and differentiations concerning the orchidaceae. Nelson's artistic and scientific work on orchids was inspired by his first encounter with them in 1928 whilst travelling in Italy. After numerous journeys to the Mediterranean region, tirelessly drawing, and intensively studying orchids including at the Geobotanical Institute Rubel, in Zurich, he published four books between 1954 and 1976. These works were published with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Text volumes are in the publisher's cloth, and plates are preserved in the publisher's matching cloth-backed slipcases.Externally, very smart indeed, with really only spotting to the boards. This is most prevalent to the slipcase of '1976' plate volume, which also has handling marks. Internally, text volumes are firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Plates are unbound as issued and are also bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
