Doctorgrad in Jena erlangt hatte, zuerst in seiner Vaterstadt, 1803 in Helmstedt, wo er zum Prof. extra…ord. und Vorsteher der anat. Anstalt ernannt wurde. 1805 folgte er einem Rufe als Professor der Medicin und Geburtshülfe nach Erlangen, 1810 ging er als Prof. ord. nach Marburg, 1811 als Director der medicinischen Klinik nach Breslau, 1821 kehrte er in gleicher Eigenschaft nach Marburg zurück und kam endlich 1828 als Director der Klinik und Mitglied der wissenschaftlichen Deputation für Medicinalwesen nach Berlin, wo er im Juni 1838 starb. - Bartels gehörte denjenigen Jüngern der naturphilosophischen Schule an, welche ihren Weg dahin aus der Erregungstheorie gefunden hatten; von jenem Standpunkte hatte er zuerst eine, nicht ohne Geist entwickelte "Neue Theorie der Chemie und Physik", Hannov. 1804, später eine Reihe biologischer und physiologischer Arbeiten, darunter einen anerkennenswerthen "Leitfaden der Physiologie der menschlichen Lebensthätigkeit", Freiberg 1809, veröffentlicht, an welche sich eine mit großer Wärme geschriebene "Vertheidigung der Gall'schen Lehre" (Berlin 1806.), ferner eine auf naturphilosophische Theoreme gestützte "Erklärung der Vorgänge im thierischen Magnetismus" (Frankf. a. M. 1812.), eine naturphilosophische Darstellung der Natur ("Anfangsgründe der Naturwissenschaft". 2 Bde. Leipz. 1821-22.) und einige pathologische Arbeiten anschließen. Schon in der 1829 erschienenen "Pathologischen Physiologie" (Cassel) herrscht ein mehr nüchterner Ton, und noch mehr spricht sich diese Wandelung zu einem wissenschaftlichen Realismus in den letzten Schriften Bartels' ("Grundzüge einer speciellen Pathologie der Cholera", Rost. 1832. und "Die gesammten nervösen Fieber" etc., 2 Bde. Berl. 1837. 1838.) aus; bald nach Beendigung des zweiten Theiles der letztgenannten Schrift starb Bartels, und so war dem hochgeschätzten Manne der Schmerz erspart, zu sehen, wie spurlos diese mit großem Fleiße bearbeitete Schrift an den Zeitgenossen vorüberging, welche dem veralteten Standpunkte seiner Anschauungen schon entwachsen waren oder doch schnell entwuchsen. Dezember 1778 in Braunschweig; 4. Juni 1838 in Berlin) war ein deutscher Mediziner. --- Leben: Der älteste Sohn des Theologen und Vizekonsitorialpräsidenten August Christian Bartels besuchte zunächst das Katharineum sowie ab 1796 das Collegium Carolinum und das Anatomisch-Chirurgische Institut[4] in Braunschweig, ehe er in Jena Medizin studierte und 1801 dort promoviert wurde. Im Jahr 1802 war er als Arzt in Braunschweig niedergelassen. 1803 habilitierte er sich in Helmstedt und wurde dort außerordentlicher Professor für Anatomie und Physiologie sowie Vorstand der anatomischen Anstalt. 1805 wurde er Professor für Medizin und Geburtshilfe in Erlangen und Direktor der Entbindungsanstalt. Laut Angaben im Braunschweigischen Biografischen Lexikon blieb er bis zur Auflösung an der Universität Helmstedt und wechselte 1810 als ordentlicher Professor an die Universität Marburg, wo er zugleich Direktor des Anatomischen Theaters wurde. --- Ab 1811/1812 war Bartels Professor der Physiologie und Direktor der Medizinischen Klinik in Breslau. 1816/17 war er Rektor der Universität Breslau. 1821 kehrte er als Professor für Pathologie und Therapie nach Marburg zurück und wurde dort Direktor des Medizinisch-Klinischen Instituts und Hospitals. Er hielt dort Vorlesungen über Anatomie, Anthropologie, Osteologie, Pathologie, Physiologie, Syndesmologie, Therapie und allgemeine Biologie sowie über Celsus und Hippokrates von Kos. Ab 1823/1824 war er auch Prorektor der Universität. --- 1828 wurde er Direktor der Universitätsklinik in Berlin und Mitglied der wissenschaftlichen Deputation für das Medizinalwesen. Er war zudem Geheimer Medizinalrat. --- Bartels war von naturphilosophischen Strömungen geprägt, die sich in seinen Schriften niederschlugen. Er war mehr Gelehrter als praktischer Arzt, was seinen Stand am Universitätsklinikum in Berlin erschwerte. Er veröffentlichte beispielsweise Bücher über den damals vieldiskutierten Animalischen Magnetismus und 1806 eine Verteidigung der Phrenologie von Franz Joseph Gall.

An einen namentlich nicht genannten Medizinalrat mit Dank für dessen Gastfreundschaft in Breslau, wo eine Ärztetagung stattgefunden haben dürfte: [.] Ich war seit meiner Entfernung von Breslau bald etwas leidend, bald in so hohem Maaße beschäftigt, als ich es nur in der ernstesten Zeit meines L…ebens gewesen bin und hatte daher auch nicht Muße, die Ihnen versprochenen Auszüge von meinen in Breslau gehaltenen Vorträgen zu entwerfen. Da ich jedoch über den heutigen Nachmittag ganz nach Wunsche verfügen kann, so habe ich bereits nach einem Schreiber geschickt, dem ich dieselben, während ich selbst die Zeichnungen anfertige[,] in die Feder dicti[e]ren will, und ersuche Sie bestens, nachdem Sie diesen Aufsätzen die Ihrem Ermessen nach passendste Form u. Bartels war seit 1805 Professor der Medizin und Geburtshilfe in Erlangen, ging später nach Marburg und übernahm 1811 die Leitung der Medizinischen Klinik Breslau. Zehn Jahre darauf kehrte er in gleicher Funktion nach Marburg zurück und ging 1828 als Klinikdirektor und Mitglied der wissenschaftlichen Deputation für das Medizinalwesen nach Berlin. Neben Arbeiten zur Pathologie, Biologie und Naturphilosophie veröffentlichte er 1809 einen Leitfaden der Physiologie der menschlichen Lebensthätigkeit". Der erwähnte Physiologe Jan Evangelista Purkinje (17871869) war einer der führenden Mediziner seiner Zeit. Auf den Gebieten der Physiologie des Sehens, der Embryologie, der Histologie des Herzens und des Kleinhirns, der Physiologie des Schwindels, der Pharmakologie und der Phonetik gelangen ihm zahlreiche Entdeckungen und Erkenntnisse [.] Zugleich entwickelte er innovative Methoden der Selbstbeobachtung in der Sinnesphysiologie, der Mikroskopie und der Experimentiertechnik. Daneben führte [er] als einer der ersten Experimentalkollegien und praktische Übungen in den universitären Unterricht ein und gründete 1839 das erste eigenständige Institut für Physiologie an einer deutschen Universität" (DBE).
