Two vintage publicity photographs from the 1941 film, one showing actors Lupe Velez and Guinn "Big Boy" Williams, the other showing actress Helen Parrish. Printed mimeo snipe on the versos, and one with the stamp of studio photographer Ray Jones on the same. Hijinks and comic misunderstandings abound on a luxury liner headed to Havana. From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. 8 x 10 inches. About Near Fine.

This Australian-American comic actor specialized in character roles (hen-pecked husbands, rubber-legged drunks); he appeared in more than 150 films between 1923 and 1951, and is often remembered for the "Mexican Spitfire" series (1939-43) opposite Lupe Velez. Large and bold "To Preston / Best wishes always / Leon Errol" in blue fountain pen on a pristine beige 6" X 3 3/4" autograph album leaf, n.p., n.y. Fine. Though place and date are not indicated, this was obtained by noted collector Preston Sawyer (1899-1968), California journalist and historical writer, in San Francisco around 1930. (Verso bears signature of actress Mary Charleson Walthall, 1890-1961, Irish actress and second wife of character actor Henry B Walthall.) A choice example.

Vintage publicity photograph of W.C. Fields and Gloria Jean from the 1941 film. Told as a "real life" film starring Fields as himself, "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break" is an off-beat and slightly bizarre spoof on the Hollywood and filmmaking industry of Fields' time. The film doesn't quite follow a storyline, and is instead intentionally riddled with inconsistencies, forgotten characters, and wacky plot holes. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.
