Sixty-seven years later, still creating, he designed costumes and sets for the 1980 Glyndebourne Festival's Der Rosenkavalier. In between (mostly in the '20s) he was the only top Paris designer illustrating his own haute couture, most of the illustrations appearing in Harper's Bazar. This is a collection of original designs from Erté's triumphant Harper's Bazar period. Erté loves elaborate decoration, but hates meaningless ornament; these 218 illustrations show how he integrates all his pockets, pearls, cuffs, fur linings, jeweled tassels, and seamless dresses into thematic unity, and maintains a consistent ideal of fashion, by constant improvisation and inventive wielding of pure line. His firework color sense finds spectacular realization in 8 full-color reproductions of Harper's Bazar covers, all of which are now prized collector's items. Over a career spanning the century, Erté has expressed his versatility in many forms; in these exquisite, delicate, theatrical miniatures (which will delight any lover of fashion history and graphics) he gives the very best of himself. This is a used book. Pages are clean and bright with no markings, notes, or highlighting. Covers show only minor shelf wear and are not creased. No owner's marks or bookplates, not ex-library. Binding is tight and square. Corners not bumped. An excellent reading copy. Note that oversized or heavier books may require additional postage.

Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket With Some Tears & Small Pieces Missing. 0812812654. Illustrated by Erte. Introduction by Michael Holroyd. 77 pages. hardcover. Jacket Design by Bernard Schleifer. jacket drawing based on a design by Aubrey Beardsley. keywords: Europe England Literature World Literature. DESCRIPTION - ERMYNTRUDE AND ESMERALDA was written as an exchange of correspondence between two teenage girls who have pledged themselves to find out all they can about sex, love, and making babies. Their reported discoveries include a passionate love affair between Esmeralda's younger brother and his male tutor ('Will they have babies? If not, why not?'); Ermyntrude's affair with a handsome footman on a staircase; the attempted seduction of Ermyntrude by her governess. By using nursery terms for private parts of the anatomy (bow-wows and pussy cats will never sound the same), Strachey makes all the more ludicrous society's standard reaction of horror to sex and deviation. Wit, irony, exaggeration, melodrama, these were Lytton Strachey's methods in this recently discovered and never before published novella. It is when Strachey is not humorous that the reader should beware of taking him seriously. In ERMYNTRUDE AND ESMERALDA he is extremely amusing, but he was seeking more than mere enjoyment for his readers; he was seeking sexual enlightenment and toleration in a period that was hostile to the pleasures of the flesh, or at least hypocritical about them. inventory #6884 Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket With Some Tears & Small Pieces Missing.
