Het boek gaat dieper in op twee belangrijke aspecten van de middeleeuwse gevangenis. Een eerste deel handelt over de gevangenis als publiek gebouw, pal in het centrum van Mechelen. Daarom is dit niet alleen het verhaal geworden van de gevangenis, maar ook dat van de burgers. In het boek wordt aangetoond dat de bouw van de gevangenis onlosmakelijk deel uitmaakte van een grootschalige stadsaanleg in de 13de eeuw. Verdere ontwikkelingen in de bouwgeschiedenis van de middeleeuwse gevangenis kunnen gekoppeld worden aan politieke veranderingen, urbanistische ingrepen en verschuivingen in de rechtspraak.
