Their case against deportation from Jamaica had been brought before the House of Commons in 1824 by Stephen Lushington, M.P., where the decision of the colonial government had been overturned" [description by Kings College, London]. British authorities on Jamaica had deemed Lescene and Escoffery, freemen of color, as dangerous aliens engaged in treasonable and subversive practices, particularly their participation with a committee seeking racial equality and allegedly promoting insurrection against British rule.
