Er erhielt seine frühe Ausbildung zu Hause, danach ging er nach Utrecht, wo er Altphilologie studierte, und von dort nach Leuven, wo er etwa zwanzig Jahre mit dem Studium der Philosophie, Theologie und der Heiligen Schrift verbrachte.
