Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Sometimes dated 1890 (which makes sense, as frontispiece drawing is signed "AJR 89"), though we can find no date here save the hand-written inscription to free front endpaper "Presented to Kitty Smith" (we certainly hope that's a capital "K") "for attendance / Year 1917." We have seen copies of this book with this frontispiece in B&W, but frontispiece portrait of the three girls here is in full color -- and if that's hand-colored, the execution is superb. Also rubber-stamped to bottom of FFE "Primitive Methodist Sunday School / Nottingham Road -- Ilkeston." (The Primitive Methodist Church began in England in the early 19th century, under the influence of American evangelist Lorenzo Dow, 1777-1834. Ilkeston is a town in the Borough of Erewash, Derbyshire.) 127 pp., reduced from $21. AJR (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 5th or later Edition. 12mo in original dark blue cloth (with faded dark blue topstain) but with a football-shaped gilt seal reading "Prize Awarded for the School Board for London" embossed into the front board. And, indeed, a bookplate has been glued to the front pastedown, memorializing the award of this book for her Proficiency in Arithmetic, July 1902 (though what the poor lass was doing in school in July we can't imagine) to young Alice Tritton, student at the Mina Road Higher Grade School, School Board of London, Lambeth Division. This single-volume edition, itself, is a solid "good," with some modest age-toning to the page edges, totaling 517 pp. of moderately small type (8 pt., actually.) Frontispiece photo of the author still protected by its (moderately foxed) tissue guard. List of author's works runs through "Dariel" (1897), but beyond that, said list further refers to Blackmore as "the late," dating this printing at least to 1900. (This is NOT the quarto, illustrated, 3-vol. "Exmoor" Edition, NOR the leather-bound, de Luxe India Paper "Pocket" Edition, both of the same vintage.) The 1951 Hollywood adaptation starred Barbara Hale (Della Street) and Richard Greene (Robin Hood,) while Maurice Tourneur directed an earlier, 1922 silent version with Madge Bellamy. Reduced from $25.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Full-color pastedown to front board depicts an Indian brave standing and shouting in a birch-bark canoe. (OK, we wouldn't stand up in a birch-bark canoe, either. Great ornamental breech-cloth, though.) The frontispiece is a B&W line drawing on matte paper. Board corners poking through the cloth. Book has a slight aroma which, though not unpleasant, is hard to place. Talcum powder? Indian fighting in the valley of the Ohio. 249 pp. Reduced from $22. Illustrated by Fred A. Elliott (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Copyright 1925, but that's inherited from the Doubleday, Page original. This Grosset & Dunlap reprint, while a handsome book in reflex blue boards with a two-color title page, is probably a year or so later. Unusual in jacket, even in this G&D reprint. (This jacket is "good only," missing the top quarter-inch of its spine, with more chips to the front panel, as well as some diagonal creasing to bottom right corner of said front panel.) The author attended New College, Oxford, for three years on a Rhodes scholarship. In 1917 he got his start as an editor for the Ladies' Home Journal, then moved on to the Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger as a reporter and columnist. Morley's first novel, "Parnassus on Wheels," appeared in 1917. The protagonist, traveling bookseller Roger Mifflin, appears again in his second novel, "The Haunted Bookshop" (1919.) In 1920 Morley returned to New York to write a column for the New York Evening Post. He was one of the founders and a longtime contributing editor of the Saturday Review of Literature. A devoted fan of Sherlock Holmes, in 1934 he helped found The Baker Street Irregulars with William Gillette, Vincent Starrett, Alexander Woollcott, and Gene Tunney. He was also one of the first judges for the Book of the Month Club, serving in that position until his health began to fail in the early 1950s. Author of more than 100 novels, books of essays, and volumes of poetry, Morley is probably best known for his 1939 novel "Kitty Foyle," filmed by RKO in 1940 (Ginger Rogers, Academy Award for "Best Actress.") Here, Morley "looks at maturity, individual growth, and human nature." "Thunder on the Left" was adapted as a play by Jean Ferguson Black in 1934. 273 pp. Reduced from $52.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Glossy frontispiece. "Quad penels" design to front board. This is the sixth Tom Swift adventure, originally copyright 1911, but this is a "Very-good" 1929 printing in a good dust jacket missing bottom inch-and-a-half of jacket spine. This book lists 31 Tom Swift titles (through "His Talking Pictures" (1928) to jacket front flap, but 32 through "His House on Wheels" (1929) to internal ads at rear. We count 11 "Radio Boys" through "Aiding the Snowbound" (1928) to jacket rear flap; jacket rear panel and internal ads both list seven Don Sturdys through "Among the Gorillas" (1927.) We'll presume a publication date of 1929. Unfortunately, it seems to have proven logistically impossible to haul along the always amusing "colored man" Eradicate Sampson and his recalcitrant mule to Earthquake Island, but Howard R. Garis (1873-1962) -- of Uncle Wiggily fame and here writing under the Appleton house name of the Stratemeyer Syndicate -- does manage to give him and the trusty "Boomerang" a brief introductory comic turn, delivering a telegram. Alas, no sign of Koku, the superstitious Argentine giant. 211 pp. Reduced from $37. Illustrations by H. Richard Boehm (illustrator).

Minor foxing noted throughout. Exterior chipping noted along spine - possible insect damage. This was part of a collection of early American Sunday School Union publications all published before 1835.
