The author, the Rev William H P Greswell, was born in the area on which this historical study is based and was a dedicated historian of his" Land of Quantock." Although the book initially aimed to cover a wider area of Somerset, in his preface to "The Land of Quontock" he noted that he had found ".that the history of one Quantock village led so quickly and obviously to that of its neighbour, that I decided to summarise my researches under the convenient geographical heading "The Land of Quantock." Later in the preface he said ".although the land of Quantock is only a section of the county of Somerset, it may, nevertheless, be said to represent in a very marked degree the wider annals of England." Indeed, the area selected for his historical study is vibrant in events of importance in English history. Gresswell sets out these events in 21 chapters, beginning with "A Prospect", an overview of the area, moving on to chapters with headings such as In the Prehistoric Time, The Coming of the Romans . the Danes and. The Normans, The Plantagenets War and Trade, Henry VIII and the Passing of the Monks, Elizabethan Days, The Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion, which with its Battle of Sedgemoor (1685) ushered in 200 years of peace on England's soil. William Greswell's book is not limited to Quantock's historical events, discussing the successive foreign occupations, there is much about the people of the "Land", the rich, the noble and the everyday village folk, its architecture through the ages, archeaologicl revelations, Church and State, times of violence offset by the beauties of the countryside. The author has cast the net wide to present a graphic word picture of life in a amall area of Somerset, over a long period of history, but also suggesting that it "represents the wider annals of England."
