About the book (from the dust Jacket) When you live in the warm brightness of an island in the blue Caribbean Sea, your life has its differences, In the United States, for example, your mother probably would not pick a banana for your breakfast. Neither would you have to help a lady with her cocoa fruit because the basket fell off her head. And you certainly would never run across the enormous crawfish (lan gouste) which François found on his way to school. But like François, you might have reasons for being late to school -reasons you thought were good ones. And like François's teacher, yours might disagree and insist that if you could not get to the school on time, you could not go on a picnic in a bus with the rest of the class. This is the near-tragedy Francois faces in this book. How it will surprise you. About the Author (from the dust jacket) The Author: Mrs. Ethel Sadowsky is a native of Worcester, Massachusetts. She wrote the story of François and his langouste after a visit to Martinique, in order to give her own children a true picture of the island. A Radcliffe graduate with a Masters in Education from Harvard, Mrs. Sadowsky found that simple French words seemed essential to her story. In the book they are not differentiated from English words, as one way of suggesting the bilingual nature of the island background There is a glossary at the end, however, for those who need it. About the Artist (from the dust jacket) Herbert Danska has won many awards and citations, and his paintings are hung in a number of museums. He has illustrated at least fifteen books, including, for Little, Brown and Company, TOLD IN RUSSIA in the Favorite Fairy Tales Series and THE STORY OF PEOPLE and THE STORY OF OUR ANCESTORS by May Edel. FRANÇOIS AND THE LANGOUSTE proved particularly to his liking for he knows Martinique and was pleased to represent the warm color of this and other Caribbean islands.
