Erstmals 1574 in Rom erschienene Euklid-Ausgabe, kommentiert von Christophorus Clavius. Clavius (1537 oder 1538-1612) stammte aus Bamberg und übersetzte seinen Familiennamen Schlüssel (oder Clau) nach Gelehrtensitte ins Lateinische. Er war Mathematiker und Jesuitenpater am Collegio Romano. Von seinen Zeitgenossen "Euklid des 16. Jahrhunderts" genannt, wurde er vor allem durch die unter seiner fachlichen Leitung durchgeführte Kalenderreform zum Gregorianischen Kalender im Jahre 1582 berühmt. Er verfaßte mehrere Mathematikbücher, interessierte sich für Astronomie, entwarf astronomische Instrumente, begründete die wissenschaftliche Arbeit an der Vatikanischen Sternwarte und unterhielt freundschaftliche Beziehungen zu Galileo Galilei.
