Ce superbe volume sort des presses du premier directeur de l'imprimerie royale du Louvre, Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy. Fidèle à la conception traditionnelle qui envisage l'histoire comme un répertoire d'enseignements destiné aux princes, ce texte a été élaboré par Bossuet alors qu'il agissait en tant que précepteur du dauphin Louis de France (1661-1711), fils de Louis XIV et de Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche. Inspiré par La Cité de Dieu de saint Augustin, le Discours (rédigé dès 1677) est structuré en treize chapitres et couvre « l'histoire universelle », comprenant l'Europe et le Moyen-Orient, depuis le récit biblique de la Création jusqu'au règne de Charlemagne. En plus de son aspect éducatif, la profondeur philosophique et les implications politiques de ce Discours en font une uvre majeure de l'auteur, qui est surtout reconnu pour ses Oraisons funèbres. En 1681, année de la première publication du Discours, Bossuet, fraîchement nommé archevêque de Meaux après avoir terminé son préceptorat, est devenu l'une des figures les plus influentes de l'Église de France. Le style de Bossuet, qui fait entrer ce texte parmi les textes majeurs de la littérature française, se caractérise par une grande éloquence et une rigueur intellectuelle, alliant des phrases élaborées à une clarté d'expression. Son utilisation de la rhétorique, des métaphores et des références bibliques confère à ses discours une profondeur émotionnelle et philosophique. Par ailleurs, il excelle dans l'art de persuader, visant à instruire et à élever moralement son auditoire. L'ouvrage se divise en trois parties : « Les Époques », « La Suite de la religion » et « Les Empires ». La première partie relate les principaux événements qui se sont déroulés depuis la création du monde ; la deuxième partie décrit l'avènement du christianisme, préfiguré par Moïse, et la victoire de l'Église catholique ; la troisième partie s'attache à dépeindre la grandeur et la décadence des empires de l'Antiquité, finalement unifiés par l'Empire romain, lui-même diffuseur de l'Évangile. Le propos de l'auteur est apologétique en ce sens que l'histoire du genre humain depuis les origines jusqu'au règne de Charlemagne est envisagée comme une manifestation de la providence divine : pour Bossuet, l'histoire répond à un dessein de Dieu, qui y est intervenu afin de voir triompher le christianisme. Après les coups réitérés dont vous nous frappez dans le Livre Moderne[3], sans relâche et sans indulgence exagérée, il faut que nous publions (sic) au plus vite un volume pour riposter à pareille artillerie. Or il sera assez coquet de vous voir escarmoucher dans notre Préface en faveur des Amis des Livres[4]. Uzanne inflige de sévères critiques à peine voilées aux Amis des Livres dirigés par Eugène Paillet et ce dès les premières pages de sa nouvelle revue : « Soit qu il nous plaise de résumer en un court chapitre la théorie de l illustration moderne, soit qu il nous convienne de parler du format des livres d art, soit enfin que la fantaisie nous porte à partir en guerre contre la routine de nos éditeurs les plus en renom, dont l esprit de nouveauté, de recherche et d originalité se donne si peu carrière, on peut être assuré que nous ne faiblirons pas à notre tâche et que nous irons toujours de l avant, sans crainte de nous attirer les sarcasmes et les calomnies des bibliophiles vieux jeu, rétrogrades, fermés aux visions du progrès et qui, loin de s appeler amis des livres, méritent par leurs préjugés et leurs errements le qualificatif plus juste d ennemis du Livre.
