Cinquième volume de la monumentale traduction française du Bhâgavata Purâna, entreprise par le grand indianiste Eugène Burnouf (1801-1852), pionnier des études sanskrites en France, et poursuivie après sa mort par ses élèves et collaborateurs. Le Bhâgavata Purâna est l'un des dix-huit grands Purânas de la tradition sanskrite, texte fondamental de la bhakti vouée à Krishna, considéré comme une incarnation suprême de Vishnu. L'édition française de Burnouf, commencée en 1840, demeure une référence incontournable dans l'histoire de l'indianisme européen. Le premier volume publié par Burnouf en 1840 contient les Livres I, II et III. Le tome II a été publié par le même et contient les Livres IV, V et VI. Le tome III a été publié par le même en 1847 et contient les Livres VII, VIII et IX. Le tome IV a été publié en 1884 seulement et contient la première partie du Livre X. Ce cinquième tome, publié tardivement par l'Imprimerie Nationale en 1898, est dû aux soins de M. Hauvette-Besnault et du R. P. Roussel, de l'Oratoire, qui poursuivirent la traduction à partir des manuscrits et notes de Burnouf. L'ouvrage constitue à la fois une traduction érudite et un témoignage précieux du développement des études comparatistes et orientalistes à la fin du XIXe siècle. Contrairement aux volumes précédents ce cinquième volume ne contient pas le texte original en sanskrit. Il comprend le Livre X, chapitres L à XC, où l'on suit K???a depuis l'installation des Y?dava à Dv?rak? jusqu'à l'hymne conclusif. On y trouve les grands épisodes de ses mariages et alliances (Rukmi??, J?mbavat?, Satyabh?m?, seize mille princesses), la quête du joyau Syamantaka, la victoire sur Naraka, B??a et ??lva, ainsi que la délivrance de nombreux rois captifs. Le volume relate aussi les rencontres de K???a avec les P???ava, la mort de ?i?up?la, l'épisode du brahmane Sud?m?, et divers enseignements théologiques (hymne des Veda, louanges à N?r?ya?a). Le dernier chapitre (XC) célèbre enfin la gloire du dieu et les fruits spirituels de l'écoute de son histoire. Le Bh?gavata Pur??a ? ou ?r?mad Bh?gavatam ? est l'un des dix-huit grands Pur??a de la littérature sanskrite, composé entre le IX? et le XI? siècle de notre ère. Texte fondamental de l'hindouisme, il développe la théologie de la bhakti, la dévotion aimante envers Vi??u sous la forme suprême de K???a.
