Dopo aver dato prova di abilità e coraggio nella prima fase della campagna antiaustriaca, al B. venne rimproverata la possibilità data a Radetzki di chiudere le sue truppe nel Quadrilatero, e dell'ondeggiante seguito del confronto bellico. "Il 12 ottobre il B. presentò la sua relazione quale comandante del I Corpo d'Armata, corredata di numerosi documenti riservati. Ma la commissione ministeriale, esaminata la sua relazione, gli mosse alcuni appunti, come se fosse stato il responsabile di tutta la condotta della guerra. Il B. allora non seppe più frenarsi e la diede alle stampe coi documenti (5-6 dicembre). Il re ne fu sdegnato. Il ministero decise di rimuovere dalla altissima carica l'imprudente generale.
