Stapled Binding. Condition: Very Good. Crease on back corner. 1979 Stapled Binding. Unpaginated. Includes photographic portrait of Evans as a young man by Paul Grotz, five photographs by Evans selected from an exhibition of 74 images at Lunn Gallery in Washington, D.C. Walker Evans, (born November 3, 1903, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. - died April 10, 1975, New Haven, Connecticut), American photographer whose influence on the evolution of ambitious photography during the second half of the 20th century was perhaps greater than that of any other figure. He rejected the prevailing highly aestheticized view of artistic photography, of which Alfred Stieglitz was the most visible proponent, and constructed instead an artistic strategy based on the poetic resonance of common but exemplary facts, clearly described. His most characteristic pictures show quotidian American life during the second quarter of the century, especially through the description of its vernacular architecture, its outdoor advertising, the beginnings of its automobile culture, and its domestic interiors. - Britannica.

Fine early plan of Macquarie Harbor in western Tasmania, the earliest separate plan of the Harbor, with soundings in its entrances and within the harbor, which appeared in Duperrey's "Voyage Autour du Monde . . ." in 1827. It is a most remarkable harbor, holding three times the volume of Sydney harbor, with an extremely treacherous and narrow opening to the sea named "Hell's Gates" that required the early seaman to station themselves on either side of the opening, winching ropes to bring the ship through safely. The entrance to Macqaurie Harbor was charted by P.P. King in 1819. The harbor itself and part of Gordon River were surveyed by George William Evans in 1822 and his chart was incorporated in the 1826 issue of the Hydrographical Office's "Chart of Van Diemen's Land." However, a separate plan was not issued by the Hydrographic Office until 1845. No. 44. in the lower right outside neat line. 50.5 x 76 cm. Tooley p.317 #215; oddly, not listed on Trove. Engraved by Ambroise Tardieu. Central horizontal fold, in pristine condition.
