Exhibition catalog documenting thirty works of symbolic painting and sculpture conceived around the rebuilding of society after a deluge or apocalypse. Fifteen essential figures include the physician, astronomer, gardener, historian, and librarian. Each receives two interpretations: one in encaustic and mixed media on canvas, the other in glass sculpture incorporating metal or wood. Accompanying texts connect their roles with mythology, alchemy, astronomy, geometry, and cultural memory. Seattle artists Nancy Mee and Dennis Evans are married collaborators with distinct artistic practices. Mee trained in printmaking at the University of Washington and studied etching at S. W. Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. Her 1984 residency at Pilchuck Glass School introduced experiments in fused and slumped glass that became central to her sculpture, alongside photographic imagery and fabricated metal. Evans studied chemistry before earning degrees in ceramics and design at the University of Washington. His career encompasses performance, installation, painting, and artists' books, with participation in the 1979 Whitney Biennial. His constructions combine wax painting, objects, diagrams, and inscriptions with longstanding interests in science, mythology, and systems of knowledge. This joint project presents the same fifteen subjects through Evans's layered wall works and Mee's freestanding sculptures.…

Binding secure; pages unmarked. Illustrated with color reproductions of the artworks, accompanying descriptions, an introduction, exhibition checklist and artist biographies and exhibition histories. Listing photos show the exact copy included in this sale. Contemporary art exhibition catalog documenting an imaginary sultan's collection of extraordinary objects, created by Seattle artists Nancy Mee and Dennis Evans for their 2011 exhibition at Friesen Gallery in Ketchum, Idaho. Glass sculpture, mixed media assemblage and encaustic panels form a fictional library of wonders, combining scientific imagery, mythology, sacred geometry and metaphysical speculation. The exhibition's premise sends explorers around the world to acquire fabulous, previously unseen objects for the sultan's empty library. The artworks appeared with shipping crates, elaborate labels, freight stamps and invented bills of lading. Accompanying descriptions supply imagined origins and functions, giving the collection the character of a cabinet of curiosities populated with impossible instruments and symbolic artifacts. Prima Luce contains, within the fiction, the first light after the Big Bang, captured and sealed in a canister. Its richly textured panel combines equations, diagrams, lettering and cosmic imagery. Occularium Mysterium offers a device for looking into the human soul through lenses engraved with enigmatic symbols. Horologium Oscillatorium proposes an extraordinary instrument for calculating time across religious calendars and the cycles of the sun and moon. A cosmographic instrument records the celestial canopy, while Aurea Sectio connects the golden section with Luca Pacioli, mathematical proportion, nature and sacred geometry. Four monumental glass and metal boundary markers represent the cardinal directions through the tortoise, phoenix, white tiger and dragon. Other sculptures include the Omphalos Stone, associated with the navel of the world and the Tree of Life; The Ouroboros: Essential Forms; Bi Cong; and Double Headed Serpent. Luminous glass forms and dark metal supports contrast with the layered surfaces, written passages and diagrammatic imagery of the encaustic works. A record of Pacific Northwest contemporary art joining studio glass, sculptural assemblage and narrative installation. Mee's background in printmaking and experimental glass complements Evans's work across ceramics, performance, mixed media and scientifically inspired art. The catalog documents their shared exhibition concept through individual objects whose materials, symbols and fanciful histories connect art with systems of knowledge, collecting and wonder.…

The exhibition was held at Woodside/Braseth Gallery, Seattle, Washington, from August 31 - October 8, 2016. [From Artists' statement} This exhibition is based on an idea found in "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare and secondarily the film by Peter Greenaway Prospero's Books. Magician Prospero, rightful Duke of Milan, and his daughter, Miranda, have been stranded for twelve years on an island after Prospero's jealous brother Antonio (aided by Alonso, the King of Naples) deposed him and set him adrift with the then-3-year-old Miranda. Gonzalo, the King's counselor, had secretly supplied their boat with plenty of food, water, clothes and the most-prized books from Prospero's library. These books enabled Prospero to find his way across oceans, to combat malignant spirits, to colonize an island, to educate and entertain Miranda and to summon Tempests. "Knowing I loved my Books, he furnished me From mine own Library with volumes that I prized above my Dukedom." The artists, husband and wife Dennis Evans and Nancy Mee, have collaborated on this exhibition, and for the first time have actually collaborated on individual pieces. They have created in their own styles and personal vernacular, speculations of what "Prospero's Library" might have looked like. And so in Prospero's/Shakespeare's voice, "Now I want Spirits to enforce, and Art to enchant . . . ".…
