The principle of the lens cylinder and the elucidation of the mechanics of apposition and superposition optics are amongst his outstanding contributions. It also includes a broad survey of the optics and anatomy of the eyes of many insect and crustacean species, and the first explanation for the phenomena of pseudopupils and eyeglow. It has been faithfully translated from the original with annotations to aid the reader. The new edition, with a foreword by the late Karl von Frisch, also includes a concise illustrated appendix summarizing present knowledge of optical mechanisms in compound eyes and a useful bibliography.

Im folgenden Jahr habilitierte er sich in Wien…und wurde 1874 zum a.o.Prof. ernannt. 1891-1917 lehrte er als o.Prof. der Physiologie und Nachfolger Brückes in Wien. Exner-Ewarten arbeitete vor allem über Sinnes- und Nervenphysiologie. Er regte die Konstruktion von Apparaten und Unterrichtsmodellen an, darunter das Bogengangmodell, das Otolithenmodell sowie das Laryngometer, zudem initiierte er die Gründung eines Phonogrammarchivs und erbaute einen Apparat zur Aufnahme von Sprache und Musik. Zu seinen Werken zählen Untersuchungen über eine Lokalisation der Funktionen in der Großhirnrinde des Menschen (1881) und Entwurf zu einer physiologischen Erklärung der psychischen Erscheinungen (1894).
