There are four short inked lines on the front endpaper explaining date and location of purchase. No other marks. A comprehensive bibliography on the prehistoric archaeology of Britain, including sites, artifacts, influential archaeologists, and theories from the data. This bibliography was conceived by the late Dr Wilfrid Bonser, and the abstracting was nearly completed when illness forced him to quit. The present editor took over the work at this stage and it is a source of great regret that it was not finished before Dr Bonser died. The arrangement of the material and the indexing were the work of the editor, who accepts full responsibility for all errors of judgment and of scholarship. The arrangement was, to a certain extent, dictated by the material itself, which in most cases consisted of a title only. The modern archaeologist will appreciate the difficulty of classifying, for example, something with the title "A Druidic Temple", without consulting the original paper. It would have been impossible to do this in all cases in a work of this size. The geographical zoning used to divide the various sections was intended originally to be Sir Cyril Fox's Highland Zone and Lowland Zone, but again the nature of the material dictated the final decision. The six zones chosen are given their Council of British Archaeology Group numbers, both in the text and in a list immediately following the contents pages.
