Seller: The Bark of the Beech Tree, Depoe Bay, OR, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. D.C. Eyles (illustrator). Blue cloth boards, lettered in black on spine with an illustration of a pirate, and lettered in black on upper cover with an illustration of a ship in full sail. Full color frontispiece by D.C. Eyles. (Derek Charles Eyles, 1902-1974, probably best known as a comic illustrator - particularly his pictures with horses in them.) The dust jacket, lacking here, was also illustrated by Eyles, but since I've never seen it I don't know if it was the same picture as the frontispiece or not! This classic novel was first published in Zurich in 1813, and translated into English the following year. Originally written by Johann David Wyss, it is usually published under the name Johann Rudolf (or J.R.) Wyss, his son, who edited the manuscript for publication. The story has been enlarged and adapted by successive editors and translators. This copy is undated, but carries a school prize label on front pastedown dated 1931, and I'd put publication at no more than a year or two earlier. The spine is a little darkened and there is minimal wear to extremities. Edges are slightly browned, and prelims - especially title page and margins of frontispiece - are also browned. Overall, a very good, tight and solid copy. Scarce in this edition.
