Add to basketLeather. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A scarce two volumes of legislation issued during the tumultuous reign of King George the Fourth. These statutes were passed in the first and third year of the reign of the King. The 1820 volume being the fist session of the seventh parliament of the United Kingdom of Great britain and Ireland, while the 1822 volume is the third session in the seventh parliament. Opens with a table of all the statutes passed during these periods including private acts not printed. Includes a blank sample general statement of income and expenditure used at the time and a blank form filled in by an overseer of the Act entitled, An Act of taking Account of the Population of Great Britain, and of the Increase or Diminution Thereof. George IV led an extravagant lifestyle that contributed to the decadent fashions of the Regency era and taxpayers were enraged at his wasteful spending in time of war. He had a poor relationship with both his father and his wife, Caroline of Brunswick, whom he even forbade to attend his coronation. He introduced the unpopular Pains and Penalties Bill in a desperate, unsuccessful attempt to divorce his wife. For most of George's regency and reign, Lord Liverpool controlled the government as Prime Minister. George's governments, with little help from the King, presided over victory in the Napoleonic Wars, negotiated the peace settlement, and attempted to deal with the social and economic malaise that followed. In a half calf binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed with wear to corners and head and tail of spine. Joints starting but firm with front joint of 1820 edition weak. Fading to backstrips. Internally, firmly bound with heavy foxing to first and last couple of pages and scattered spotting to pages throughout. Good. book.
