> Adams, II, E-1178. "Oxford Bibliographical Society Publications", XXII, 105, per l'edizione 1590. L'opera viene curiosamente citata nell'introduzione del volume di Klaus H. Wachtmann "The Roots of Donald Trump - 45th President of the United States". 250 gr.

One volume in two. Folio (10 4/8 x 7 4/8 inches). 10 preliminary leaves (pages 3 and 4 with expert repairs to wormholes affecting the text) including the engraved architectural title-page (expertly re-margined) with engraved portrait of the author on verso both with original hand-color, fine large folding map of the Low Countries "Leo Belgicus" (later issue, in recent color and supplied) and 208 double-page engraved plates with EXCEPTIONALLY FINE ORIGINAL COLOR, including three laid down, by Franz Hogenberg on numbered and paginated bifolia with text on versos, mounted on guards (many renewed), two engraved calendars on verso of penultimate leaf (plates III, CIII, CCVII with expertly repaired tears affecting the images, early marginal repairs to plates XXIX, CXXVI, browned and occasionally stained). Early vellum over thin paste-board, yapp fore-edges, title in manuscript on the spines (a few stains, small tear at the head of the spine on volume two). Provenance: Near contemporary inscription partially obscured at the foot of the title-page; the fine engraved bookplates of "Mr. Jullien, Procureur General des Eaux et Forests de France" on each front paste-down; the early ownership inscription of "Cernof 1768" in gold ink on the title-page. First published in 1583 with 112 plates, there were frequent reissues with augmentations of the text and in the number of plates. Graesse describes the 1588 edition as the last and rarest, although this may be a variant issue, having the imprint of van Campen on the colophon but not the date 1588 which Graesse calls for. The bifolia are numbered to 208, as called for on the title-page. There are 10 preliminary leaves, including the title, and the final numbered bifolium is followed by 4 final leaves headed "Calendarium Belgicum", the first two unpaginated, the next with the pagination following on from that of the bifolia. Eytzinger witnessed the beheading in 1568 of the Counts of Egmont and Hoorn in the Grand Place in the center of Brussels for treason to the Spanish crown which then ruled the Low Countries. He became a partisan historian of the Dutch Revolt (1579-1648), and his "de Leone Belgico" faithfully chronicles the events of that Revolt. Frans Hogenberg's (1536-1590) magnificent plates graphically illustrate the many battles of the Revolt and particularly the atrocities committed by the Spanish in their struggle to maintain power in the region. 1588, the year in which this edition of "de Leone Belgico" was published, is also the year that the Spanish Armada was defeated by England. Eytzinger's celebrated map "Leo Beligicus" depicts the 17 Provinces of the Low Countries in the shape of a lion and became a symbol of unity and strength for the Dutch. Brunet I, 122-123; Graesse I, 49. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
Cölln (Köln), bey Johan Buchssmacher, 1587, small in-4°, 192 x 149 mm, title with copper engraved vignette (verso blank) + (3) + 70 pp (numbered I - LXX) + (4)nn pp + (1)(bl), each page contains a copper engraved portrait of a French king, with an explanation printed underneath, with a typographical border consisting of a double fillet. Modern half vellum binding, marbled boards. Title a bit stained and thumbed, some pages slightly stained or dusty, last pages with a marginal clear waterstain, still an acceptable copy. Some of the plates were engraved by Virgil Solis, (signed with his initials). The portraits in medalform were taken from the original designs of C.Corneille. They are surrounded by large rectangular ornamental borders. Within these borders, under the medallions, are 62 different rectangular scenes. The first edition of these plates was issued with a Latin text in Augsburg by Gerlach & vom Bergs Erben in 1576. A third edition appeared in Cologne in 1598 (BMSTC 292). All editions are quite rare. This first Köln edition is very rare. Only 1 copy recorded in the USTC - Nr. 664945 ( copy of the Bayerische Staatsbibliotheek ).
