SECOND EDITION (1881), 1 year after first, 12mo, 130 x 100 mm, 5 x 4 inches, bound in publisher's green reverse calf (suede) with yapp edges, 'Children's Birthday Book' in gilt on upper cover, spine pla…in, all edges gilt, silk effect beige endpapers, 288 pages. Coloured frontispiece with tissue guard (3 girls in front of a fireplace), numerous pretty line illustrations throughout, some full page, 8 by Kate Greenaway (3 unsigned), most of young children. Poems for children accompany the illustrations. Lower yapp edges of covers just slightly creased, 2 very minor marks to covers, gilt bright, inscription on 2nd blank endpaper, 25 neat entries plus 1 on a small piece of paper pasted into place. A very good plus clean tight copy in what seems to be the original white posting box, now rather worn. The engravers are named on page 286 and the printer on page 288, the same firms as for the first edition published by W. Mack. There may be other illustrations by Greenaway but Schuster has only positively identified 8. Many of the illustrations and verses are from the St. Nicholas Magazine (notice on page 286). Beautifully illustrated book of 6 pop up illustrations of fairy tales and many b/w illustrations in the text. 26 pages in overall clean condition, a few light marks and some light dusty appearance from age.Tear and tiny loss to bottom front d…ecorated endpaper, vertical crease to same endpaper, previous owners name in ink on front endpaper dated 1896. Pop ups are very brighjt and clean no tears or damage to pop ups, just a couple of small marks to the bottom of the outer illustrated borders of 4 popups this is caused by the opposite pages have stuck to the illustration and taken some away and leaving it on the opposite page, can be seen in images. NO dustwrapper, illustrated boards are rubbed and worn to edges, some light scratching and marks more apparent to plain white rear cover, cloth spine are a little rubbed top and bottom.
