Ce mémoire de Double occupe les pages 129-153. Il constitue l'…un des premiers et des rares mémoires médicaux sur le rêve. François Joseph Double (1776-1842) étudia la médecine à Toulouse puis à Montpellier et vint s'établir à Paris. Il eut une très importante patientèle. Il fut membre de l'Académie de médecine et de l'Académie des sciences. Il fera paraître un grand ouvrage de Séméiologie générale (3 volumes publiés en 1811-1817-1822). REFERENCES : Vaschide N & Piéron H : De la valeur séméiologique du rêve, Revue Scientifique, 1901, XV, 385-398 et 427-429: "Il [Double] divise ensuite les rêves en quatre catégories : a) rêves dépendant de la réaction de l'organe pensant sur lui-même ; b) rêves dépendant de l'action des sensations extérieures ; c) de l'association des idées ; d) enfin, rêves dépendant de l'action des sensations internes et des fonctions animales. Ce sont ces derniers seuls qui ont une valeur séméiologique. Puis il distingue les signes diagnostiques et les signes prognostiques. De violentes douleurs à une partie du corps signifient, en général, quand le rêve n'est pas dû à une action extérieure, lésion, inflammation ou gangrène de la partie. Et à ce propos il cite les deux exemples qui seront partout et indéfiniment répétés dans la suite. Le premier est celui du savant Conrad Gessner qui rêve qu'il est mordu au côté par un serpent, et qui reconnalt bientôt à cet endroit les signes d'un anthrax qui l'emporte en cinq jours. Le second est d'Arnauld de Villeneuve : il rêve qu'il a été mordu au pied par un chien enragé, d'autres diront par une vipère, et ne tarde pas à voir ce membre affecté d'un ulcère cancéreux. On a vécu longtemps sur les données de Double sans rien apporter de nouveau ou d'original.
