Paperback. Condition: Good. Six charming Victorian children's books from Laura Valentine, beautifully illustrated in colour. Collection comprised of: Home Pets; The Sea Side; Aunt Louisa's Railway A. B. C.; The Robin's Christmas Eve; Bruin the Bear; The Three Little Doggies. In the publisher's original pictorial soft covers. Undated, dated from copies held by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge Libraries and from the contemporary inscription to the front cover of Home Pets, dated 1881. Each work is delightfully colour-illustrated with six chromolithographic plates by illustrators F. J. Skill, Horace William Petherick and Johann Baptist Zwecker. Collated, complete. A lovely selection of Victorian children's stories by Laura Valentine under the pen name "Aunt Louisa". Valentine was well known for her children's fiction, which often had a moral or educational focus, and also as a prominent editor at Frederick Warne & Co. and of Girl's Home Book and The Chandos Classics. In the publisher's original pictorial soft covers. The spine of Bruin the Bear is reinforced with cloth. Contemporary inscription to the front cover of Home Pets, dated 1881. Similar inscription to The Three Little Doggies. Faint ex-libris stamp to the bottom edge, front and rear, of Aunt Louisa's Railway A.B.C. Externally, generally smart and good examples for their age. Reasonable shelf wear, resulting in a number of tears and loss of paper to edges and particularly along the spines. Covers noticeably discoloured with several spots and marks. Internally, binding a little fragile with weak joints, where the text blocks are beginning to come away from the outer wraps. Similarly, a few examples of the first and last pages beginning to peel from the paste downs. Pages understandably age toned with light spotting and the occasional mark. Good. F. J. Skill; H. W. Petherick; B. Zwecker (illustrator). book.
