I am not aware that this law was ever carried out. It was probably only a threat. But what a piece of monumental folly such coercion was. It made no distinction between Shakespeare's dramas, or Milton's Comus and the lowest indecency of a second-hand playwright. We want to get Christ so fully into the hearts of the masses of our countrymen, that they will find no pleasure in anything dramatic which is not pure and elevating, so that a theatre that does not bring forward high-toned drama actually will not pay.'
