Condition: as new. Amsterdam : Aksant, 2007. Paperback. 302 pp. : ill. ; 21 cm. (Sociale cohesie in Nederland, 12). Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9789052602585. Keywords : CRIMINOLOGIE, strafrecht criminologie.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Every now and again I receive a lengthy manuscript from a kind of theoretician known to psychiatrists as the 'triangle people' - kooks who have independently discovered that everything in the universe comes in threes (solid , liquid, gas; protons, neutrons, electrons; the Father, the Son, the Holy Ghost ; Moe, Larry, Curly; and so on) . At the risk of sounding like a triangle person, let me explain why I think that the topic of this volume - - storage and computation in the language fac ulty - though having just two sides rather than three, is the key to understanding every interesting issue in the study of language. I will begin with the fundamental scientific problem in linguistics: explaining the vast expressive power of language. What is the trick behind our ability to filleach others' heads with so many different ideas I submit there is not one trick but two, and they have been emphasized by different thinkers throughout the history of linguistics.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Most linguistic theories assume that each grammatical relation is established in a unique structural configuration. Neeleman and Weerman take issue with this view, arguing for a more flexible approach on the basis of conceptual considerations and data taken mostly, but not exclusively, from the Germanic languages. In-depth analyses of word order phenomena as well as diachronic and typological generalizations motivate a re-evaluation of the role of case in the projection of arguments. Case is shown to provide a syntactic foothold for thematic interpretation, something which is necessary in a grammar that does not allow fixed theta-positions. Thus, this study does not only offer a genuine alternative to many standard assumptions, it also explains why there should be such a thing as case in natural language.…
