Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good Indeed. M. Daumier (illustrator). First edition. A collection of medical satires written in twenty-five long poems, in rhyming couplets, carefully revised and corrected by the author, with notes following each satire. Illustrated with thirty woodcuts along with many humorous vignettes and caricatures by First edition. Two volumes bound in one, complete. With a preface by M. Th. Poupin and a note from the author to front. Antoine Francois Hippolyte Fabre was a doctor, journalist, and poet. Fabre studied medicine in Paris in 1824. He also taught and edited several prestigious medical journals during his career. Fabre's satire Némésis Médicale was a criticism of the French medical system in which he ridicules medical students, and medical examinations, doctors, the competition, charlatans, specialists, midwives, medical responsibility, phrenology, homoeopathy, pharmacists and the French Academy of Sciences and other subjects. Honoré Daumier (1808 - 1879) was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, whose many works offer commentary on social and political life in France in the 19th century. A prolific draftsman who produced over 500 paintings, 4000 lithographs, 1000 wood engravings, 1000 drawings, 100 sculptures he was perhaps best known for his caricatures of political figures and satires on the behaviour of his countrymen, although posthumously the value of his painting has also been recognised. In a quarter crushed morocco binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities and slight rubbing to boards. Front hinge strained. Bright but with slight scattered spotting in places and the occasional slight tidemarks and handling mark to pages. Very Good Indeed. book.
