A deliciously satirical work by Irish poet Thomas Moore (1779-1852) which parodies the Aix-la-Chapelle diplomatic conference, between Britain and her then allies, through the guise of a boxing match. The political pugilistic plea begins with a lengthy prefatory address burdened with pseudo scholarship, with the poem itself being laden with nonsense footnotes. It was also aimed at Foreign Secretary Lord Castlereagh. An Anglican Tory, as Irish Secretary Castlereagh had been ruthless in the suppression of the United Irishmen and in pushing the Act of Union through the Irish Parliament. Moore lampoons Castlereagh's deference to the reactionary interests of Britain's continental allies Moore also spent time living in America. Thomas Philip de Grey, 2nd Earl de Grey, 3rd Baron Grantham, 6th Baron Lucas , of Wrest in Bedfordshire, was a British Tory statesman.

Second edition (published in the same year as the first edition). xxxii, 88pp. Quarter bound in brown leather over black boards, paper title label on spine. 12mo. Boards are worn, rubbed and rounded on corner and spines, rubbed all round edges, title label chipped. Internally some spotting, especially on endpapers and first and last few leaves, minor soiling in places. Boards are firm and strong but internally binding is brittle. Thomas Moore (1779-1852) was an Irish writer and poet, regarded as on the English Romantic era poets, his works were among the popular of early 19th century Irish literature, and he was noted for his depictions of Catholic Emancipation, often noted as a Catholic patriot in Ireland. This volume is among his political squib writing - a lampooning pastiche attack on the then Foreign Secretary, Lord Castlereagh for his ruthless suppression of United Irishmen and for pushing the Act of Union through the Irish Parliament and the deference he had shown to the reactionary interest of British allies in continental Europe. A fine - and effective - example of political satire.

First Edition
First Edition. Octvao. 16.5cm. Contemporary black half straight grain morocco (or in fact something that is the leathery equivalent of thin gruel, masquerading as morocco) over marbled paper covered boards, titled in gilt to spine. Some scuffing and wear and to the boards and extremities, with a couple of places where the thin skin of the leather has chipped away a little, strong and tight, regardless of cheap production ethics, it's a very good little copy. Internally clean, and rather artfully printed. A rather scathing satire of political standpoints of the day presented through the lens of a 19th century boxing fanatic and through the words of Tom Crib [sic], All England Champion of the art of bare knuckle boxing between 1808 and 1822, who won 15 title fights and suffered no defeats, becoming on of the most famous and influential pugilists in history, and the darling of "The Fancy" those gentlemen and not quite so gentle men who were addicted to the pursuit and practice of bare knuckle boxing in the early 19th century. Cribb and his contemporary sportsmen frequently featured in political satire and argument of the time in the guise of "Everyman" figure, like the "Man on The Clapham Omnibus", a vague figure who nonetheless personified the thoughts and opinions of the average man in the street.
