Publisher's cloth, mounted labels printed in brown and blue with author portrait in black, publisher's advertising on endpapers. Edges heavily rubbed, hinges weakened, head edge soiled, lightly shaken, two plates missing, age tone transfer to the title page and to p. 412. Once a devoted Mormon missionary, Stenhouse became disillusioned and crusaded against polygamy. The "New and Cheaper Edition" followed the 1880 first. This copy lacks illustrations "Over at Last" and "View of Main Street Salt Lake City." However, presence of the "Additions and Corrections" leaf is rare. Its recto is not numbered and the verso is 412: though pagination is not continuous, we find none of the text lacking. FLAKE: 8399.

Second edition of an autobiography, with preface by Harriet Beecher Stowe, penned by the wife of an early Mormon leader and missionary. Fanny Warn Stenhouse (1829-1904), was excommunicated from the LDS Church alongside her husband in 1870, after which they both became vocal opponents of Brigham Young and the LDS Church's practice of plural marriage. The book presents a frank account of Stenhouse's lived experience. Second edition, first published in 1874. Single vol. (9". by 6"), pp. xxx, [31]-623, with frontispiece and in-text line-drawn illustrations depicting the scenes in the book, in original green cloth stamped in blind and gold. Good. Some surface wear to binding, toning and spotting, frontispiece loose.
