He left Oregon by sailing ship for California (by way of Hawaii) and his narrative is filled with local color. The book is illustrated with 20 plates and a frontis illustration. This is a later printing of the original 1844 edition w…hich was titled "Travels in the Californias." The book was republished in 1859 with a new title, "The Early Days of California." The author says that this book is a sequel to his previous book, "Travels in the Great Western Prairies" which was published in 1843. The covers are the original publishe's dark green cloth binding; the gilt spine lettering is dull, but still legible. There is foxing to the frontis illustration and its tissue guard, and some light tanning to the title page opposite the tissue guard. There is an occasional bit of scattered foxing, but most pages are clean and bright as are the plates. There is a bit of extremity wear to the tips and the top and bottom of the spine and the spine is leaning slightly. There is an old owner name in an old hand on the front end paper. He covers Indians, missions, Mexican War, gold, sea voyage, villages, traders, trappers, Hawaii, etc. Ref: Howes F49, Cowan p. 203, Graff 1294, Smith 2999, Wagner Camp 107: 13; B&W Illustrations; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 314 pages.

From 1842 he published accounts of the West that electrified America and Britain. In 1844 he published his Travels in California, which form the kernel of the present item. Farnham died in 1848 but his work continued undimmed; as the treble-exclamation announcing the pictorial edition indicates, there was great demand for visual accounts of the Wild West. The illustrated edition (first published 1849) was the first to contain an account of the gold-producing parts of California, capitalizing on the gold rush. No map is called for, but some copies of the Pictorial Edition have Wheat Transmississippi 609/Gold Region 85.2 ("Map of the Gold Regions of California" [Ensigns & Thayer, 1849]) inserted. James Strohn Copley (1916-1973) was the consummate twentieth-century Californian. He published the San Diego Union and Evening Tribune (merged into the Union-Tribune in 1992), and was a longtime friend and confidant of Goldwater and Nixon. He began in the Northeast, managing the school newspaper at Phillips Andover and the humor magazine at Yale. Eventually the Copley Press came to own a great many papers in Illinois and, principally, California. Any copies with a map are rare. This one is from 1846 and probably was printed by Ensign and Thayer. It has better than normal colors and very little damage.The worst spot is in the fold in Mexico a little paper loss and about a 2 inch split. There are no bad stains or spots. The text is tight and complete with lots of illustrations. There is some light scattered foxing. 514 pages. We could find no other copies of this map for sale at present.

From Morse and Breese's "North American Atlas." An important pre-Gold Rush map of California. The town of Sacramento is not identified as such, but is rather… labeled "Suter's Colony," before his name was Anglicized to "Sutter." Carl Wheat writes in "Mapping the American West 1540-1857: A Preliminary Study," with regards to "Map of the Californias," "Farnham had gone overland to Oregon in 1839-40 and later visited California by sea. He claimed to have talked with Ewing Young, the celebrated trapper, and with a Dr. Lyman of Buffalo, and to have used data from them on his map, which is otherwise of the familiar Timpanogos River type. An overland route is shown proceeding across 'Farnham's Pass' in the Rockies, thence by way of Brown's Hole to Lake 'Timpanigos,' down Mary's River (the Humboldt), and over the Sierra by a 'low gap' (possibly Walker Pass). 'Dr. Lyman's' route from Santa Fe to Los Angeles also appears, and far to the north is a hint of Fremont geography.".
