Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. This scholarly monograph explains the probable literary and social sources of inspiration for Geoffrey Chaucer's circa 1351 poem Parlement of Foules. Chaucer's work was superficially a morality tale of avoiding temptation and error, but supported the idea of free will and, pointedly, the free will of women to choose their own mates. Most characters are foules (birds) presided over by goddess Nature, and this provides an acceptable veneer over sly satire and commentary about social customs and government. Farnham's monograph details the resemblance of Parlement to earlier tales and connects Chaucer's telling to the social customs of the day. This tall 8vo book is 9" x 6" and paginated 27,(3 blanks). Saddle stapled in soft, pale green, paper wraps. Staples holding well. Although not so stated, this book was published by Modern Language Association of America (MLA). Beginning while a PHD student at Harvard University, Farnham was a prolific writer of monographs on medieval, Chaucerian, Elizabethan, and Shakespearian literature. A frequent contributor to the academic literary criticism journal Modern Language Notes (MLN), he was also an editor of literary criticism for Prentice-Hall and the Pelican Shakespeare Series. In clean, Near Fine condition.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 27 pages.

The author examines versions of the tale and their diffusion from ancient India to Europe to illustrate how the tale evolved and was adapted over time. The author posits that Chaucer likely encountered a version of the tale in Italy, which he then adapted for his poem. Throughout, the book offers a detailed comparative study of the tale in both its oral and written forms, illuminating its significance in Chaucer's work and its broader literary and cultural context. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. This book delves into the literary history of a captivating folk tale known as 'The Contending Lovers', tracing its journey from ancient Indian origins through various Persian and Arabic versions, culminating in its widespread adoption in European folklore. The author examines four distinct types of the tale: the Resuscitation tale, in which a maiden is brought back to life; the Rescue tale, which involves saving her from a monster or peril; the Caste tale, where suitors compete based on their social status or accomplishments; and the Creation tale, in which a woman is magically brought to life from inanimate matter. The book explores the evolution of these tale types over centuries, highlighting their common elements and the cultural influences that shaped their development. It examines the significance of the tale's open-ended nature, which invites discussion and interpretation, and discusses its enduring appeal as a source of entertainment, cultural commentary, and philosophical reflection. Through this exploration, the author reveals the tale's rich thematic depth and its insights into human nature, love, and the complexities of choice.
