Yemen (amtlich Jemenitische Republik, arabisch DMG al-?umh?riyya al-Yamaniyya) ist ein Staat in Vorderasi…en, im Süden der Arabischen Halbinsel. Jemen grenzt im Norden an Saudi-Arabien, im Osten an Oman, im Süden an den Golf von Aden und das Arabische Meer, im Westen an das Rote Meer. Die Staaten Dschibuti und Eritrea liegen etwa 20 bzw. 30 Kilometer entfernt jenseits des Roten Meeres. Zu Jemen gehören auch die Inselgruppe Sokotra sowie zahlreiche kleinere Inseln im Bab al-Mandab im Roten Meer und im Arabischen Meer. Der Staat Jemen ist aufgrund des Bürgerkrieges allerdings gescheitert, auf dem beschriebenen ehemaligen Staatsgebiet existieren derzeit mehrere De-facto-Staaten. Im Jahr 1990 vereinigten sich die zwei früheren Staaten Jemenitische Arabische Republik (JAR, "Nordjemen"; Hauptstadt Sanaa) und Demokratische Volksrepublik Jemen (DVJ, "Südjemen", Hauptstadt Aden) zum heutigen Staat. Seit 2013 herrschte zunächst ein Bürgerkrieg. In diesem Konflikt gelang es den Huthi-Milizen, die Hauptstadt Sanaa und große Teile des Landes zu erobern. Am 25. März 2015 leitete Saudi-Arabien unter militärischer Mitwirkung acht weiterer Staaten (Islamische Militärkoalition) eine militärische Intervention unter dem Namen Operation Decisive Storm zur Unterstützung der Zentralregierung unter Staatspräsident Hadi und des Regierungschefs Chalid Bahah ein. Damit weitete sich der Konflikt massiv aus und wird als Stellvertreterkrieg zwischen Saudi-Arabien und dem Iran bewertet. Aufgrund des Krieges im Land sind Stand 1. British aid was withdrawn shortly after independence leaving the budget suffering from a staggering deficit. British forces were withdrawn on the eve of independence draining in their wake huge amounts of liquid cash which they used to pour into the markets by way of daily individual and family spending on everything from housing to taxis and provision stores. To aggravate the situation, the Suez Canal was closed to traffic following the war in the Middle East in June 1967 depriving Aden of nearly eighty per cent of sh.

This was written, compiled and published by the Guides and Handbooks of Africa Publishing Company on behalf of the RAF (credited to the back flap). It includes an opening message from Air Marshal Sir Charles Elworthy, who was Commander-in-Chief of Middle East Command (Aden), a newly formed unified command that succeeded the British Forces Arabian Peninsula on March 1961. (Elworthy had been appointed C-in-C of British Forces Arabian Peninsula in August 1960). This guide was therefore issued on the occasion of the reorganisation of British forces in Aden. Although it was directed primarily at service personnel and their families, it acknowledges shared interest for transit passengers and businessmen. Chapters cover background information, living in Aden, shopping, off duty, sightseeing, Middle East Command, Naval and Ground Forces, Services' welfare, Leave in Kenya, Eastleigh for adventure (this refers to the RAF station near Nairobi, "a springboard for some of the roughest, toughest and most adventurous activities in the RAF" including mountaineering, rock climbing, canoeing, sailing, and safari arranged under the RAF's Expedition Training Scheme), Middle East memories (by Air Commodore EL Howard-Williams), Little Aden, Muslim beliefs and Adeni customs (by Farouk Luqman), History of Aden (by Anne Webster), Postage stamps of Aden Colony. Farouk Luqman (1935-2019) was born in Aden, the son of Mohammed Luqman, who owned Fatat Al-Jazeerah, one of the first Arabic newspapers in the Arabian Peninsula. He became a prominent journalist in Saudi Arabia, and Editor-in-Chief of Arab News.

Aden 1935, d. Jeddah 2019) studied politics and history at St Xavier's in Bombay, then journalism at Columbia. He edited and published the English language weekly "Aden Chronicle" and his father's Arabic language weekly "Fatat Jezirah" until 1967, then became correspondent for UPI, the New York Times, and Newsweek. By this time, he had also written books on the Yemen Revolution, Yemen (1970), and Djibouti Today. He went on to become Editor-in-Chief of Arab News. This work is apparently self-published, although he uses the Aden Chronicle address in his Foreword. He wrote it at an especially challenging time, noting that the new country had been plunged into "a staggering deficit" upon independence in 1967. This had been caused by an end to the overseas aid and local spending that had come with British withdrawal, and drastic reduction in bunker fuel and tourism receipts due to the closure of the Suez Canal in 1967. He wrote this "comprehensive guide book" or "fact book" in response, to alert foreign readers, visitors, tourists, businesspeople and potential investors about the country and the efforts of "her gallant and hospitable people as written by one of them" (back cover / Preface). His chapters cover tourism, economy, agriculture and fisheries, Aden port, history, geography, geology, archaeology, animal life, etc. Photos show tourist attractions, monuments, agricultural, industrial, cultural and other pursuits. The maps show Aden and its environs, and PDRY.
