Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: G+. Photos, Maps (illustrator). 1st. This excellent centennial history of the Taieri Plains district, south of Otago's "capital" Dunedin, carried the sub-title "Tales of the Years That Are Gone,'" while the then Mayor of Mosgiel, W P Hartstonge, describes the history as "neither a saga of high adventure nor a glittering story of gold discoveries, but rather a simple recital of stubborn endeavour, of the industry and fortitude of those who . developed on the Tairieri Plain an area of rich and high productivity." The foundations of that achievement go back to 1843 when the first exploration of the area by Europeans took place. It was not until 1848 that the first organised settlers arrived and that determined the district's centennial year. Pioneering progress of the Taieri was briefly disrupted in the 1860s by the loss of many men who joined the great Otago gold rushes, but some settlers profited from the gold fever by providing supplies, transport and other services for the diggers. In 16 chapters the book charts the gradual progress on the Plains, the towns, villages and rural settlements, local government organisatiions, the development of transport links (including river traffic), provision of churches, schools and medical services, sports and recreation and farming. Rolls of Honour for the fallen men of the Boer War, World Wars One and Two are included at the back, followed by a bibliography and index. This South Island local history is scarce in the first printing. Loosely enclose is a vintage "Mosgiel" bookmark. First edition of 1949, 238 pages, map frontis with 28 other plates with about 80 images (photographs and portraits), two other maps. Green hard covers are VG+ with black front/spine titles, small pencil name to FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Original plain paper DJ is G+ with the lower half of the front flap fold worn through, several short tears top edge, chipping and tears with small surface loss at spine top with small chips at spine base, tape repaired tear at mid-lower spine (no surface loss), few short tears, crease, top edge rear panel with small section missing at the top flap fold. At some stage the rear flap has become detached, then secured with old tape which has lost its grip. This is now temporarily and lightly attached with fresh tape.
