Georg Wilhelm Fasel (illustrator). First Edition. A beautiful view of Central Park in its first decade, showing the Rambles from across the lake, when what is now densely wooded was but early growth saplings and can see the whole topograpjy clearly, its gently rolling hills, much of it indistinguishable from meadow. Adding interest are small groups of people strolling, relaxing, on horseback. The lithograph is No. II (2) in a series of twelve1862 lithographic prints in "Central Park Album", issued by publisher Rau, for which Birchett Brothers was the sole agent. The pictorial part of the print measures 21 by 33 cm. With what might be considered the regulation margin, taking in the captioning and essentially what one expects to have visible under glass if framed, is 28 by 40 cm. Our copy has additional margin, and is thus 29 by 46.5 cm, although this surplusage has a heavy layer of grime, which we are pretty confident can be removed, but is probably not worth the effort. We have removed the print from its frame in order to clean some of its soiling. The exposed print presented no unpleasant surprises. We are keeping it out of its frame, but the frame is included in the sale. The frame is neutral, in our view. It neither enhances nor detracts. Importantly, it has no serious issues. It measures 49 by 59 cm. The matting was handsome. However, it snapped into two pieces when we removed the print. Even if this hadn't occurred, we believe it needed to be replaced for the sake of the print because of its acidity. That, and we would replace the brads used to secure the print in the frame, are why we are leaving the print unframed for now.
