Couverture rigide. Condition: Très bon. Edition originale. References : Gay [in. Bibliographie des ouvrages relatifs à l'Afrique et l'Arabie : 258]. __________________________________________________________________________________ _ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION : Contemporary full calf. Small 8vo (161x100 mm), (16)-302-(2 bl.) leaves. Sign. pi? *? [A-Pp]?; pi4 signed '*iiij'; Pp7, and Pp8 are blank. Binding rubbed, spine chipped with lack of leather. Marginal waterstains. Rare first latin edition of this famous description of Africa. Born Al Hassan Ibn Mahommed Al Wezaz Al Fasi probably in Granada in about 1494, the author received a great part of his education at Fez, later travelling through most of northern Africa between 1507-1520. He undertook his most famous series of journeys across the Sahara into modern day Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Chad between 1513 and 1515. Later he travelled to Constantinople and Egypt, and while travelling home from there in 1520 was captured by pirates and presented to Pope Leo X in Rome. There he converted to Christianity, was baptized and adopted his Christian name. First published in Italian in 1550, this first Latin edition was the basis for the English translation of 1600. A complete copy, with the 2 final blank leaves often missing and in a contemporary binding. Provenance : Candid von Engelshofen (1803-66) historien autrichien (Tampon et cote sur la page de titre)). First Edition
Folio (305 x 200 mm). Vol. 1 (of 2) only. (40), 495, (23) pp. Wood-engraved title border, double-page woodcut map of Africa, including Arabia, and 26 illustrations, all but one coloured by a contemporary hand. 18th c. mottled calf with giltstamped red label to fully gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. Scarce first French edition of the famous description of Islamic Africa and Arabia, with the illustrations coloured by a contemporary hand; the first collection of voyages printed in France. The book was originally written in Arabic around 1526 by the Berber Andalusi geographer and traveller al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi (ca. 1494-ca. 1554), known in the West as Johannes Leo Africanus, translated into Italian by the author and first published in Venice in 1550. The Arabian Peninsula is depicted nearly complete on the double-page woodcut map and is treated extensively in the first chapter, which contains information on its people, cities, geography, religion, customs, costumes, etc. Illustrations include Arabian camels and veiled women. - Johannes Leo took his Christian name from his sponsor Pope Leo X when he converted to Christianity after his capture in 1520. While still very young he began to travel widely in the Barbary States; in 1513 he appears to have started on his famous Sudan and Sahara journeys (1513-15). In 1516-17 he travelled to Constantinople, probably visiting Egypt on the way; it is more uncertain when he visited Arabias, Armenia and Tartary. His three Egyptian journeys, immediately after the Turkish conquest, all probably fell between 1517 and 1520; on one of these he ascended the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. - Binding somewhat rubbed; spine head and hinges professionally repaired. Repairs to lower margin of first two leaves (very slight loss of title border), some toning and soiling, water- and inkstains. Very occasional marginal tears or worming. Early marginalia and ink ownerships on title page ("Pacauld" and "Ex Bibliotheca Joh. Huyseri", i. e. Johann Huyser). No other auction record of a coloured copy in RBH or ABPC. - Adams L 482. (32), 517, (7), 21, (1) pp. Strictly contemporary blind-stamped pigskin binding over wooden boards, upper capital slightly damaged, paper label with old title on back on spine. Clasps missing. Old title in ink on fore edge. Interior fine, apart from worm traces to the first five leaves and a small paper flaw on the colophon page. Book plate on the front paste-down. *** Second separate Latin edition of Leo Africanus, much rarer on the market than the first one which had appeared three years earlier. Gessner's edition takes up the translation by Johannes Florianus made from Ramusio's Italian text. This edition is of particular interest because of the inclusion of Conrad Gessner's Latin version of Hanno's account of his navigation along the African coast. This is the first edition of Hanno in any language using Latin characters, after the Greek editio princeps. ***The binding by Binder C.S., active 1555-1563 (see Einbanddatenbank). Blindstamped plates of the muses. Dated 1560 under the central panel, one blindstamp dated 1559. A very attractive copy.

Condition: Good. 384 pp., / 387-800 pp., [14 index], engraved title page, contemporary half-calf, rubbed, occasional spotting and soiling, description of Northern Africa written by the geographer and traveller Leo Africanus. Born Al-Hassan ibn Muhammed al-Wazaan al-Fasi, probably in Granada in ca. 1494, and upon completing his education in Fez, the author travelled through most of northern Africa between 1507 and 1520. In 1520 he also journeyed to Constantinople and Egypt, only to be captured by pirates and presented to Pope Leo X in Rome, where he converted to Christianity. This work was originally published as part of Ramusio's "Delle navigatione et viaggi". It was translated into French by Jean Temporal and published by the translator in Lyon in the same year as the Antwerp edition. Of the Lyon edition, Alden writes: "Extracted and translated from Ramusio's Venice, 1550, Primo volume delle navigationi, and including also Vespucci's narratives. The latter are not found in the Antwerp editions of Leo Africanus of this year" (Alden 556/25). About the first edition: "During the years 1511-1520, Leo Africanus travelled to Fez, Morocco, Tunis, and across the Sahara Desert to Timbuktu. He visited the native states on the Upper Niger to Kario, Houssa, Bornou and Lake Chad. He also made a voyage to Constantinople and Egypt and then crossed the Red Sea to Arabia. He was subsequently captured by the Venetian pirates and presented to Pope Leo X whose name "Leo" he adopted as his surname. The Pope persuaded him to translate the Arabic manuscript account of his travels into Italian. Floreanu then translated the account into Latin. This is generally considered to be the first book published in Europe by a person of primarily African descent. The book was considered the most important on the geography of Africa and an especially important source for all information on the continent. The book was printed in a multitude of languages over hundreds of years after the first Italian and Latin editions were issued. The English translation did not appear until 1600. Until the great European voyages and explorations into Africa in the 1600s and 1700s, Leo Africanus's work was considered the primary source for all studies on the Sudan and even of Africa."
