First Edition
260 x 200 mm. (10 1/4 x 7 3/4"). 6 p.l., 13-90 pp, [4] leaves, including two blanks at either end. Original half deep brown morocco over gray boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (signed in gilt on the front pastedown), raised bands, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Engraved title by Alfred Richard Lane, with 20 etched plates by Betty Shaw-Lawrence, all pencil signed by the illustrator. The spine very slightly sunned, otherwise fine. This attractively illustrated and well-made private press book is a love letter to the traditional English herbal. Poet Thomas Fassam (fl. 1940-1952) draws on works from the 16th to 19th centuries to provide the "principal lore" of everyday herbs. These descriptive vignettes are accompanied by the etchings of Betty (Bettina) Shaw-Lawrence (1921-2018), which balance a graceful, loose modernity with a black and white certitude calling to mind the striking woodcuts from historical herbals. Printed by Ditchling Press in Sussex on handmade paper, and in a pleasing but unpretentious binding, this volume is a quiet delight inside and out. FIRST EDITION. No. 58 OF 260 COPIES. Signed by the author on the limitation page.
