Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The multicultural city of Pompeii and its ruins form the basis for Fattal's sculptural series investigating the history of displacementOver the last 50 years, Lebanese American artist Simone Fattal's (born 1942) multifaceted practice has explored the impact of displacement as well as the episteme of archeology and mythology, drawing from a range of sources including war narratives, landscape painting, ancient history and poetry. Inspired by her visit to the archeological sites of Pompeii, Fattal debuts a new body of sculpture and ceramics blending history with memory, grappling with the loss of time while revealing its repetitions. Says Fattal of Pompeii's significance, "the place has not been destroyed by time, but by a moment . there are fragments of all periods mingled together . Egypt is present, but also Syria and Asia Minor. But with all this diversity and differences, it seems that all lived together in harmony." Softcover. Condition: VG+. Sixteenmo. Softcover. Illustrated wraps with white, black and yellow titles. 167 pages : color illustrations ; 16 cm. Hans Ulrich Obrist leads readers into the world of path-breaking Syrian artist Simone Fattal in this intensely personal volume. For over five decades, Simone Fattal (b. 1942, Damascus) has eschewed singular form or subject in her wide-ranging artistic practice. In this deeply personal biography, Fattal's close friend and confidante Hans Ulrich Obrist journeys with the artist across physical borders and through seats of imagination. Together they discuss the artist's remarkable early life in Syria, her coming-of-age in Lebanon, as well as her transcultural life in France. Wartime memory and exile in California, sow the seed for discussions regarding archaeology, history, and mythology. Beginning her artistic life as a painter in 1969, Fattal initially created sensuous abstract works that diverged from the predominantly figurative paintings commonly exhibited in Lebanon at the time. In 1980, after a decade spent in Lebanon, Fattal fled the ongoing civil war, departing from painting, eventually settling in Sausalito, California, where she founded the revolutionary publishing house, Post-Apollo Press. In 1988, after studying sculpture in San Francisco, Fattal was consumed by another wave of creativity that led her to pursue the creation of ambitious ceramic sculpture--a medium in which she continues to work in to this day from her studio in Paris. Prose and interviews between Fattal and Obrist are annotated and introduced by Dr. Omar Kholeif, whose essay helps situate Fattal's multiple creative journeys. An afterword by author, curator, and filmmaker Rasha Salti entitled "Warrior Women Fall From a Low Height" pulses, both in its lyricism and its expressive desire to solder and suture histories, once fractious, back together. …

Softcover. Condition: As new. Quarto. Softcover. Translucent white wraps with illustrated green belly band. 226 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 26 cm + 6 supplemental prints (20 x 14 cm). Parallel texts in English and German. Influenced by her experiences of war and migration, Simone Fattal has transcended the boundaries of both media and geography like few other artists of her generation. In her collages, she combines pieces from her private archive with historical events in the Arab world. Made up of individual parts and reassembled, these works suggest the fragility of an identity shaped by migration. Her more abstract ceramic sculptures reference ancient myths and archaeological finds. Fattal's first solo exhibition in Germany is accompanied by the artist's first comprehensive monograph, which combines essays by long-time companions with new scholarly contributions by international authors.…

Format 18,8 x 12,2 cm ( 72 gr ). Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. A rare gem! This copy is in very good standing. The contents are clean and bright. I believe there to have been three different covers on this edition. This one is a yellow theme. A large yellow sun, above a paler moon above a darker triangle. "From the publisher: This new Etel Adnan catalogue is produced to accompany the artist's first solo exhibition in a UK public institution, titled The Weight of the World. Adnan's unique career - spanning several decades and including as wide a range of media as it does traditions and continents - has made a significant contribution to the artistic, cultural and political landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries. Presenting the impressive diversity of Adnan's practice, the publication includes reproductions of her paintings, drawings, poetry, film, ceramics and tapestries. The title of this publication and the exhibition is taken from a new series of paintings completed specifically for this show . The catalogue includes a foreword by Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist - who has also written an introductory essay to Etel Adnan's work. Critic and writer Kaelen Wilson-Goldie has contributed an essay that places Adnan's art within the political and social context that has inspired it. Robert Grenier, poet and writer, has contributed a tribute to Adnan's ability to grasp the essence of a landscape. The publication also includes artist and publisher Simone Fattal's writings on Adnan's practice. There are three book covers to select from, each depicting a different painting from Etel Adnan's series The Weight of the World. Etel Adnan, (b. in 1925 in Beirut, Lebanon)studied at the Sorbonne and then Harvard, in the late 1950s Adnan taught philosophy at the University of California and started to paint.".…
