Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The sea shaped the course and conduct of World War II, from the first moments of the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, to the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. The impact could be felt far beyond the shoreline, as the arms and armies carried across the oceans were ultimately destined to wage war ashore. Populations and industries depended on the raw materials and supplies in a war that increasingly became a contest of national will and economic might. Ultimately, it was the war at sea that linked numerous regional conflicts and theaters of operation into a global war. As the war grew in complexity and covered an increasingly larger geographical area, the organisation of the maritime effort and the impact it had on the formulation of national strategy also evolved. This volume illustrates the impact of naval operations on the Second World War by highlighting topics previously neglected in the scholarship. In doing so, it provides new insights into political, strategic, administrative, and operational aspects of the maritime dimension of the war. AUTHORS: Marcus Faulkner is senior teaching fellow in the Department of War Studies at King's College London. He is the author of The Great War at Sea: A Naval Atlas 1914-19 and War at Sea: A Naval Atlas, 1939-1945, and coeditor of Northern European Overture to War, 1939-1941: From Memel to Barbarossa. Alessio Patalano is a reader in East Asian Warfare and Security at the Department of War Studies at King's College London and specializes in Japanese naval history, strategy, and contemporary maritime issues in East Asia. His latest monograph is Postwar Japan as a Seapower: Imperial Legacy, Wartime Experience and the Making of a Navy. The sea shaped the course and conduct of World War II, from the first moments of the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, to the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In the vast literature of the Second World War there has never been a naval atlas showing graphically the complexities of the war at sea, a war which spread across every ocean. This new book will fill the gap. With more than 150 beautifully designed maps and charts, the atlas sets out to visualise the great campaigns and major battles as well as the smaller operations, amphibious landings, convoys, sieges, skirmishes and sinkings. While whole sections are given over to the Pacific war, the battles of the Atlantic and the campaigns in the Mediterranean, smaller but crucial events such as the landings at Dieppe receive in-depth treatment. The maps depict the dynamics of campaigns and battles but also include extensive information on the opposing forces, their ships and equipment and the strategic significance of events. General thematic maps, for instance, on ship losses, aerial strengths or convoy routes, give the reader an understanding of the many contributing factors that shaped the tactics and strategies of the Allied and Axis forces. No other work has attempted such an ambitious coverage of the war at sea in this period and it is destined to become a definitive reference work for naval enthusiasts and historians as well as general readers fascinated by the naval war that extended from the coldest arctic seas to the tropical islands of the Pacific. AUTHOR: Marcus Faulkner is currently visiting lecturer in the Department of War Studies, King's College London. His research interests are divided between 20th century naval and intelligence history, with emphasis on the German navy of the interwar years and the Second World War. SELLING POINTS: .More than 200 breathtaking maps and charts .Unique cartographic presentation of the war at sea .Sumptuous production standards ILLUSTRATIONS: 150 colour maps In the vast literature of the Second World War there has never been a naval atlas showing graphically the complexities of the war at sea, a war which spread across every ocean. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest campaign of the Second World War. This volume highlights the scale and complexity of this bitterly contested campaign, one that encompassed far more than just attacks by German U-boats on Allied shipping. The team of leading scholars assembled in this study situates the German assault on seaborne trade within the wider Allied war effort and provides a new understanding of its place within the Second World War. Individual chapters offer original perspectives on a range of neglected or previously overlooked subjects: how Allied grand strategy shaped the war at sea; the choices facing Churchill and other Allied leaders and the tensions over the allocation of scarce resources between theaters; how the battle spread beyond the Atlantic Ocean in both military and economic terms; the management of Britain's merchant shipping repair yards; the defense of British coastal waters against German surface raiders; the contribution of air power to trade defense; antisubmarine escort training; the role of special intelligence; and the war against the U-boats in the Arctic and Pacific Oceans. AUTHORS: Marcus Faulkner is a senior teaching fellow in the Department of War Studies at King's College London. He is the author of The Great War at Sea: A Naval Atlas, 1914--1919 and War at Sea: A Naval Atlas, 1939--1945, and coeditor of Northern European Overture to War, 1939--1941: From Memel to Barbarossa. Christopher M. Bell is professor of history at Dalhousie University, and has published numerous scholarly articles on naval history and British strategic foreign policy. He is the author of Churchill and the Dardanelles; Churchill and Sea Power; The Royal Navy, Seapower and Strategy between the Wars, and coeditor of At the Crossroads between Peace and War: The London Conference of 1930 and Naval Mutinies of the Twentieth Century: An International Perspective. 4 b/w photographs, 12 tables The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest campaign of the Second World War.
