For many years the fascinating statuettes of Ibeji, typical of the Yoruba population, have been some of the most sought after collection objects among enthusiasts of African art. In order to give collectors a global insight on the creative diversity of these charming statuettes, we have developed this catalogue, in two volumes, in which the Ibeji are classified by type, therefore permitting collectors to verify the full collection at any given moment. However we could not limit ourselves to classifying the Ibeji without giving a minimum of information, regarding them and their creators the Yoruba people. All of this in order to allow us to understand and appreciate the environment in which these fascinating and beautiful statuettes were created and existed. Should any reader wish to deepen their knowledge of the customs and traditions of the Yoruba people and that of their "twin cult", we recommend the book "Ibeji-Twin Figures of the Yoruba", written by Mareidi and Gert Stoll (published in Munich, 1980). To our knowledge this is the most comprehensive work available to scholars and collectors. We would like to conclude by saying that scientific research into the Ibeji is still in its early days, and until now there were few publications regarding this subject. We are confident that, with the passing of time and increased interest by collectors, a growing number of scholars will concentrate their research into these intriguing and fascinating examples of African art.
