Antonio Fava, "membro dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze", che fu studioso della questione sociale ed anche romanziere. Qui egli espone alcuni saggi "princìpi di buon governo" in vari campi: è contrario alla politica coloniale di aggressione e conquista militare (come tentato in Abissinia), e favorevole invece alla penetrazione commerciale; è contrario alla costruzione di grandi navi corrazzate, dispendiose ed inutili in quanto facile bersaglio; propone tasse progressive sulle successioni per sanare il debito pubblico; è favorevole all'esercizio statale della rete ferroviaria, e contrario alle eccessive retribuzioni della dirigenza e alla grande disparità retributiva; è favorevole al modello inglese delle "Trade Unions" ma contrario agli scioperi violenti. Negli ultimi capitoli sostiene infine le idee di Malthus e fa appello ad una procreazione responsabile contro un incremento demografico eccessivo che non può trovare semplice sfogo soltanto nell'emigrazione.

Interessante lavoro che condanna la Repubblica considerandola sorgente di assassini e non di guerrieri e analizza la fine del secolo evidenziato dalla 'Ragione' e dai 'Lumi' con continui riferimenti a Bayle, Voltaire, Mably, Locke, Rousseau, Hume, ed altri, con la speranza di un ritorno alla Religione e ad una morale forse perduta. Raro. Qualche normale fioritura della carta ma in ottime condizioni.
