Rare and well illustrated. Alphonse Favre was a Swiss geologist. He was a pioneer of alpine geography and became director of the Swiss Geological Commission. He studied natural sciences at the Academy of Geneva, then chemistry and mineralogy in Paris. From 1844 to 1854 he taught classes in geology and paleontology at the Academy of Geneva. He specialized in geological research of the Savoy and Mont Blanc, that included studies of ancient glaciers associated with those regions. His explanation of the geological structure showed that certain anomalous incidents of fossils were due to recurring inter folding of the strata and to complex overthrust faults. Il visita pendant de nombreuses années les régions alpines, étudiant leur structure et publia son oeuvre majeure sur ses recherches géologiques dans les parties de la Savoie, du Piémont et du Mont Blanc en 3 volumes de texte et un atlas en 1867. Il établit avec précision l'extension des anciens glaciers et organisa le recensement et la protection des blocs erratiques tant en Suisse qu'en France voisine (DHBS). En tant qu?alpiniste il fut également co-fondateur (en 1865) et président (en 1866) du Club Alpin Suisse. Première édition de l'ouvrage capital et illustrant avec grande précision. Alfonse Favre (1815 - 1890) fut un grand géologue qui étudia pendant une trentaine d'années la structure des Alpes. Fondateur de la section de Genève du club alpin suisse, il fut également un bon alpiniste.
