Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This thought provoking book delves into the significance of Japanese pageantry, a theatrical artform prevalent in medieval England, illuminating the impact it has had on the evolution of Western drama. Particularly focusing on the development of morality plays, which aimed to teach rel…igious and moral lessons, the author explores the historical context in which these spectacles were crafted and performed. By analyzing the socio-cultural factors that shaped the pageants, this book provides a unique perspective into the themes, ideas, and beliefs held by medieval English society. Through examining the physicality, symbolism, and spectacle of the pageants, the book highlights the complex relationship between art and society, offering a fresh analysis of an underappreciated aspect of English literature and drama. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the intellectual and literary landscape of Munich in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author delves into the impact of prominent figures like King Maximilian II, who fostered an environment that attracted writers and artists. The book examines the rise of…the "Grundeutschland" movement, a group of young writers who challenged traditional aesthetics and sought to connect with the common people. Through analysis of key figures such as Michael Georg Conrad, Karl Henckell, and Anna Croissant-Rust, the author explores the movement's influence on German literature. The book also discusses the broader social and cultural context of the period, including the role of women and the impact of social issues on artistic expression. This insightful study illuminates the significant contributions of Munich's literary scene to the development of German literature during a transformative era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketCondition: Good. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original grey cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered scarlet back and front. 8vo. 7½'' x 5¼''. Close Quarters is the author's first novel, published in England by Hodder and Stoughton in 1947, it did not appear in the United States until 1963. By then Gilbert's…reputation had been firmly established in both countries and his regular American publisher for many years had been Harper & Brothers. Close Quarters, however, was published by Walker and Company, a less prestigious house. In it we are introduced to Chief Inspector Hazlerigg, who will go on to be a recurring character in a number of Gilbert's works throughout the next ten years. Written while he was a schoolmaster at Salisbury. He now considers the tale cluttered, but the plan showing who was where in the close of Melchester Cathedral on the critical evening makes clear the theories of the official and unofficial detectives: Chief Inspector Hazlerigg and the dean's nephew. Gilbert, who was appointed CBE in 1980, was a founder-member of the British Crime Writers' Association. Contains frontispiece Cathedral floor plan and a variant of which repeated to the text, and three crossword grids, 252 pp. From the private library and estate of Frank Williams. Text block edges browned, with light soing to the cloth covers and in Good condition, no dust wrapper. Member of the P.B.F.A. DETECTIVE | CRIME FICTION.
