Octavo, printed wrappers. This long-running down-market fiction magazine featured a complete novella in each issue, sometimes with one or more very short stories as makeweights. The present issue (priced at 6d.) contains "The Folly of Jill" by Dirick Stafford, plus one other story by an equally forgotten author. Minor wear to spine, several small edge-tears internally repaired with archival tape, and curling of upper right corners of text block, a good copy. Copies in original wrappers of this title are quite uncommon now. (#143648).…

Ladislav Mnacko took part in the partisan movement in Slovakia during World War II. After the war, he was at first a staunch supporter of the Czechoslovak Communist regime and one of its most prominent journalists. However, being disillusioned, he became the regime's vocal critic, for which he was persecuted and censored. In the autumn of 1967 he went to Israel as a protest against the Czechoslovak stance during the Six-Day War, but returned to Czechoslovakia soon afterwards. After the invasion to Czechoslovakia by the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact in August 1968 he emigrated again, this time to Austria, where he lived for the next 21 years. Shortly after the fall of the communist regime in November 1989 he returned home to Czechoslovakia (January 1990). But subsequent political developments and the growth of nationalism in Slovak part of federation disappointed him. After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia (1992), with which he strongly disagreed he moved to Prague. Died suddenly due to cardiac weakness during a short visit of Slovakia and was buried in Bratislava. Mnacko is one of the few Slovak writers of the 1950s and 1960s who were translated into the English language. Member of the P.B.F.A. CZECHOSLOVAKIA.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book details the first exclusive motor truck shows held in Chicago and New York in 1919, both of which were held by dealers' organizations in each city. The Chicago show was held for four days and displayed 42 makes of motor trucks and 43 makes of motor truck parts and accessories, as well as several models of the standardized and special military trucks as used at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. New vehicle models were introduced by many brands, including the two new sizes of trucks offered by Paige-Detroit Motor Car Co with their first truck show appearance, and the Brockway Motor Truck Co showed a modified Class B military truck for sale on the commercial market, the only one of the seventeen assemblers who put together the first Class B trucks for the government to include such a model in their regular line. The New York show also featured many new models, including the La France, made by the Ward La France Co., the Oldsmobile, made by the Olds Motor Co., the Shaw, made by the W. W. Shaw Corp., the Trafc, made by the Trafc Motor Truck Corp., and the West, a new electric being turned out by the West Motor Truck Co. Altogether, the show displayed 46 different makes of trucks. The author provides an overview of the technical specifications of each of these brands and models, placing them within the context of contemporaneous transportation concerns and the rapidly evolving motor truck industry.
