El protagonista es el obispo ucraniano Kiril Lakota, cautivo en Rusia durante largos años y finalmente enviado al Vaticano en el curso de una negociación política. A su llegada a Roma se encuentra con que el papa le ha reservado el nombramiento de cardenal in pectore. En el cónclave que sigue a la casi inmediata muerte del anciano pontífice, es elegido nuevo papa de la cristiandad para sorpresa de todos. La trama se desarrolla en una época convulsa, sometida a grandes cambios en el orden geopolítico ? estamos en plena guerra fría ? y también religioso - es el tiempo del Concilio Vaticano II. La política de bloques está a punto de hacer estallar una conflagración nuclear y el dirigente soviético activa la antigua relación con el nuevo papa para solicitar su mediación en la crisis. El papa Lakota debe enfrentarse a un conflicto de consecuencias impredecibles, al tiempo que siente la necesidad de organizar su nueva vida en medio de la falta de libertad que ahora le ocasionan las milenarias estructuras del Vaticano, frente a las que debe imponer su criterio.
