"Die Verhörkommission [.] machte sich sofort die Verhältnisse des Vertheidigungsvereins zum Gegenstand ihrer Thätigkeit, und zog deshalb allmälig, ohne dass der veranlassende Grund dazu aus den Akten zu entnehmen wäre, die Herren [Joseph] Wolfisberg, Scherer, [Joseph] Waldesbühl, [Joseph Leonz] Müller, [Johann] Fischer von Merenschwand, Dr. Bauer [i.e. Johann Baptist Baur], [Anton] Fischer von Wihli, Christen, P. [Pater Sales] Keust und [Burkhard] Meier in das Verhör. Durch dieses Verhör suchte sie vorzüglich den Bestand des Vertheidigungsvereins zu erheben [.]." (etc.; p. 5). - Der 'katholische Verteidigungsverein' konstituierte sich im Frühjahr 1833 nicht zuletzt unter dem Eindruck des Wohlenschweiler- (Wohlenschwiler-) Handels von 1831 und wurde "zur Abwehr der 'häufigen, immer frecher werdenden Angriffe auf die Religion, ihre Diener und uraltherkömmlichen Einrichtungen' gegründet. Als geistiges Haupt der Bewegung trat schon bald Joh. Bapt. Baur, Arzt in Muri hervor. [. Der Verein] erntete von liberaler Seite Spott und Geringschätzung. Gleichzeitig aber begann man die romtreuen Katholiken staatsfeindlicher Umtriebe [.] zu verdächtigen. [.] Das Bezirksamt Muri wurde angewiesen, auf Versuche zur Störung der öffentlichen Ruhe zu achten." (H.
