Wernigg 3915.- Seltene erste Ausgabe der Gegenschrift zu Eybels "Was ist der Papst?".- "Tatsächlich verbarg sich hinter dem Pseudonym Feiner der Innsbrucker Prediger an der Stadtpfarrkirche Franz Steininger (1739-1805), der es nicht bei einem Vor- und Nachwort bewenden ließ, sondern Eybels Schrift fast gänzlich umgearbeitet hatte. In der erzählerischen Rahmenhandlung schildert Feiner, Steiningers Alter ego, wie er Eybels Broschüre mit der Hoffnung, Nachrichten über die genauen Umstände des Papstbesuches (Pius VI.) zu erfahren, zur Hand nahm und sich darin betrogen sah. Statt einer Antwort auf die Eybelsche Frage zu erhalten, habe er nur gelesen, 'was der Papst nicht ist' [.] Aus unserer heutigen Perspektive mag der Streit um den Papst eher marginal erscheinen. Die Gegenaufklärer fürchteten damals jedoch, dass mit der Diskreditierung des obersten katholischen Hirten bald schon die ganze 'geistliche Heerde zersprengt' sein werde und es deshalb dringend geboten sei, Eybels '9 kr. theuere Hirngespinnste' für den 'einfältigen Pöbel' zu bekämpfen" (Lauterbach - Köck; Volkskundl.
