Hardcover. Condition: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. From the outset I did not intend this to become a "Complete Book of Cat Poems" but have attempted instead, with feline fastidiousness, to make this a highly selective book of poems about cats. A number of famous chestnuts have been brusquely excluded, displaced by poems with whi…ch, exotic though some of them may seem, I felt instantly at home. There are poems here in which.feline traits are highly allegorized (the medieval Persian "Gorby and the Rats," for example, as well as La Fontaine). Some, from sources as disparate as medieval China and early 20th century Britain, focus on the Bad Cat (the mutual seduction of our two species are complicated indeed); a few craftily invoke the cat as a metaphor for the human condition. But despite the ubiquity of subject--"the beautiful Cat which endures"--the poems are remarkably individual. Just so, as all cat owners understand, every cat is unique, a personality in its own exquisite right, as beautiful, knowable, and yet ultimately mysterious as a good poem. Illustrated by Robert Clyde Anderson. Anderson, Robert Clyde (illustrator).
