Ligeras marcas de oxidación. Notas: Carecemos de cualquier tipo de datos biográficos sobre este autor, del que sabemos tan solo que fue médico de los Reales Hospitales madrileños. Su obra se encuentra dispersa por bibliotecas como la Nacional de Madrid o la del monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, así como en el Archivo Histórico Nacional. Son los suyos opúsculos sobre diversos asuntos relacionados siempre con el bienestar y la salud públicos. El carácter de las publicaciones, así como los lugares en los que se conservan, parecen indicar que fue el propio autor el que los envió a los reyes o al Consejo de Castilla. A través de sus títulos, podemos observar en el autor una preocupación muy del momento por reformar las costumbres, con miras (en este caso concreto) a mejorar la salud pública. Algunos de sus títulos son: Lo mucho dañoso y estragos mortales que acarrean las bebidas, tan heladas como se venden en las botillerías, a la salud humana; Las utilidades y daños que trae el agua fría de nieve; Los aires de Madrid y su situación; Sobre el buen uso de los baños de agua dulce; etc. Son suyos también un Formulario y recetario quirúrgico (1750) y una relación titulada Historia y noticia del prodigioso caso [.] que ha sucedido en el Real Hospital de esta Corte, en la muerte y cadáver de Monsiur (sic) Febre (1747), en la que hallamos el espíritu de curiosidad científica propio de los círculos ilustrados. Small 4to. [14 x 9.8 cm]. (8), 175 pp, (1). Bound in contemporary tree calf with gilt title label on spine; all edges red; typical Spanish marbled endpapers. A lovely, fresh copy in all respects. Second edition (?) of this rare guide to army medicine, "tested for many years in this country in the Hospitals of the Royal Armies, and mandated for the use in the Royal Hospitals of Madrid". The preface further notes that "este Formulario de Medicamentos se dispuso para el uso de los Reales Hospitales General y Pasion de Madrid" institutions formed in the late 16th century to care for the poor, which also treated the influx of soldiers following Spain's wars in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Perhaps in a nod to the patient population of traumatized combatants, the final section (pp. 169-175) discusses six "various beverages to cure manias", including a formula for 'maniacs' who have resisted treatment by ice-bath (pp. 173-174). On p. 64 we find a 'Bebida febrifuga purgante' naturally incorporating 'Polvos de la Corteza del Pirú'. We have been unable to trace the first appearance of this text. The present title-page claims that it has been "reimpresso con privilegio a? costa de los Herederos del Autor", while the printing license is dated 1749. Our edition certainly precedes that printed by Ibarra in 1785 (described as the fifth), which is much more common in census. The present edition is held in the US only at Wisconsin. The NLM holds only the 1785 edition; and we note that the copy of this edition at the University of Granada is lacking its title-page.
