Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Viking Press. New York. 1936. 362 pages. First edition, first printing in original DJ with $3.50 price intact on flap. Signed twice by Dexter Fellows; first on the dedication page, signature only, dated 1936, in the year of publication. The second signature is a presentation inscription to a fellow circus lover, written over the corner of his portrait, and dated Dec. 21, 1936. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Burlap cloth stamped in orange. Panels are bright and clean; titles unmarred. Pages and endpapers are bright and clean. Orange topstain has one inadvertent small ink dot. Uncommon original DJ is present and intact. $3.50 price present. DJ shows shallow chipping at crown, with small chipping elsewhere. Light creasing with a couple of small closed edge tears. The legendary ballyhoo man started with the Pawnee Bill Show at age 23, then joined the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, then moved on to the Ringling Brothers Circus, then P.T. Barnum's Greatest Show on Earth; and when Ringling and Barnum merged, he stayed on. This is his story; 40 years in the circus business, from the 1890's to 1936, the year he published his circus memoir. A cult classic; signed twice, and dated, in the year of publication; just one year before the greatest ballyhoo man on earth, would join the Big Top in the sky; in 1937. His papers and circus memorabilia collection is now at the University of Tulsa's McFarlin Library, Henneke Archives of Performing Arts. First edition, first printing, signed, inscribed and dated; twice. Near fine/VG. Signed by Author(s).
