Hardcover, in original paste-down paper covered pictorial boards (seashore scene of children with adult woman, and boy writing in the sand by John Karst on front board, decorative publisher's colophon on rear board ) , black cloth spine, 160 pp, illustrated with drawings (frontispiece of classroom, and 4 in-text of various domestic scenes, including a nice one of children ice skating) . Good, no dustjacket. Corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there and along edges of boards, four approximately 1 to 3 inch tears and some fraying along spine cloth, moderate scuffing, previous owner's sgn top edge of front board. Internally, children's sgns on front endpapers, 1/2 to1 inch tears on approximately 4 or 5 leaves, paper lightly age yellowed, hinges tender, a stray word or so underlined on approximately 4 or 5 pages, faint yellow pencil(? ) mark on 2 pages, but overall tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked, in somewhat better shape than the usual textbook of the period. School; children's; Victorian.

Bible stories for young children published by a firm associated with the Methodist Episcopal church. Illustrated with wood engravings, some signed by Felter. John Daniel Felter (1825-1914), b. New York City. He was an artist and engraver, active in New York City from 1847 to 1860. His book illustrations were primarily executed for religious publishers such as Carlton & Porter and Robert Carter & Brothers. His artwork was exhibited at the American Institute in 1847. "He was prominent in business and religious life, and in charge of the art department of the Methodist Book Concern until fifteen years ago, when he retired.For nearly fifty years he was especially active in the First M. E. Church of Greenpoint, having been a trustee, Sunday school superintendent and a class leader." - obituary, Brooklyn Eagle, March 18, 1914.
